Fantastic Free Range Rotisserie Chicken and More at Clockjack Oven, Soho

DSC_3226

Clockjack Oven brings a supremely simple and savoury dining option to Soho with its free range rotisserie chicken and yummy back-to-basics menu.

I’d been meaning to stop by this relatively new eatery near Piccadilly Circus ever since it opened back in December. Shuffling by it at different times of the day, the place just looked so inviting – whether for a pared down and no fuss lunch or for a casual and candlelit evening meal. I love rotisserie chicken and have long wondered why it’s such a rarity in this town.

So I finally got around to trying Clockjack Oven a couple of days ago. I had a very satisfying lunch and definitely can see myself craving a repeat visit soon. My four pieces of chicken were gorgeous – crispy skin, juicy meat, complimented by a range of delicious sauces: ranch, Caesar, BBQ and chilli. I really liked the super creamy ranch sauce.

Perhaps surprisingly, the veggie options are great here. They’ve got these awesome sage and onion balls to serve as substitute (or supplement) to the chicken, and they are delicious. Chips are better than average. Salads are ample as is the especially tasty house coleslaw.

There’s a rather to-the-point beer and wine list. I had a perfectly crisp Estrella. The dessert menu is short and sweet too. A few scoops of Purbeck Dorset ice cream provided a nice end note for my meal. Service was straightforward and presented with a smile during my visit. The open space and neutral design of the oak and exposed brick dining area added up to a pleasant place to enjoy a hassle free lunch.

DSC_3220

Starting this week (today’s the 4th of April 2013), Clockjack Oven is offering an early bird lunchtime special. If you can “beat the clock” and place your order before 12.15pm, you only pay £8.95 for a meal of chicken, chips and soft drink. That’s good value and great incentive to make quick dash over there for lunch. But based on my experience, I’d say whenever they’re open and you’re hungry would be a suitable time to visit. Highly recommend!

Clockjack Oven is located at 14 Denman Street, W1D 7HJ. Find out more at clockjackoven.com.

Venerdi, a Very Welcome New Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant on Chatsworth Road, E5

DSC_3171

New pizzeria Venerdi is a welcome addition to Chatsworth Road and makes this already happy local resident even more pleased about the dining options around this tasty and constantly improving slice of Hackney.

My girlfriend knows me well. Taking me to Venerdi, a new pizzeria near our flat, for my birthday lunch last week was a wise and much appreciated gift. I absolutely love pizza. Hard pressed, I’d probably say it’s my favourite food. I also really get a kick out of scoping all the changes happening around Clapton and Homerton these days, especially on Chatsworth Road where Venerdi is located. I’d been keen to try the place since I first hear about it (thanks to this LOTI post) and I guess Kemey duly noted my interest (or she was simply hoping I’d finally shut up about the place).

DSC_3172

Not quite two months old, there’s nothing particularly fancy or especially novel about Venerdi (well, aside from the half of a Fiat 500 mortared into the restaurant’s interior back wall) – just a superb selection of pizzas, pastas and classic Italian comfort food dishes. The vibe is friendly, as are the servers and even the patrons (an all-ages cross section of pleasant local yocal types).

Prices are pretty awesome. A marinara costs just under five quid and a Margherita is only £7.75 (and definitely worthy of many repeat visits!). Starters are priced around £7 too. I tried and really liked the prataioli fritti (deep fried mushrooms served with tartar sauce, £6.40). Desserts come in at very reasonable £3.95. They’ve got bottled Peroni and Moretti too and what appeared to be an affordable and decent wine list.

Yep, that’s about all it takes for me to have a satisfactory birthday: a quality Margherita in good company, washed down with a crisp Peroni. Following up lunch with some profiteroles and a highly commendable espresso does it for me too.

I’m so glad about Venerdi opening up round the corner from me. There’s more I could rave about, but if you’re in the area just go check it out for yourself. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Venerdi is located at 9 Chatsworth Road, E5 0LH. Word is they’ll be delivering soon! Find out more at venerdi.co.uk and facebook.com/Venerdi.Pizzeria.

Aromo Coffee

DSC_3168

Aromo Coffee is an online espresso coffee pod retailer. They sell ESE coffee pods, Senseo Coffee Pods and Nespresso compatible coffee capsules to customers in the UK. They also sell their ground coffee and coffee beans.

Aromo got in touch and offered me the opportunity to sample their products. The thing is, though, I don’t own a coffee pod machine. I use an old fashioned cafeteriere, and I love it. So, they sent along some of their beans for me to try. A week or so into sipping, I’m happy to report their beans are great value and make a satisfying cup of coffee.

A 250g bag of 100% Arabica “Bounce” coffee beans costs £4. Bounce is a blend of Brazilian Daterra Bourbon with “more than a generous hint” of Sumatran Mahandeling. Think something along the lines of French or Italian espresso roast and you’ll get the picture. Full flavour, kinda creamy.

Of course, plenty of other caffeine fiends out there don’t use cafeteriers and are more than pleased with the results from their pod and capsule coffee machines. I reckon if Aromo’s basic coffee beans are decent that coffee made with their pods and capsules should be too (if that’s your thing). However you go about doing your coffee brewing, Aromo is worth keeping in mind, especially if you’re stocking for an offer or place with multiple coffee drinkers coming in and out. They offer a money back guarantee and next day delivery.

Tasty Kids’ Stuff for Grown Ups @ Lazybones, Farringdon

DSC_3155

A Ms Pacman table or a Donkey Kong console in the corner would complete the fun times effect, but Lazybones gets bonus points (with some caveats) for its easygoing and tasty menu.

It could have been the early 90s, and I could have been at a sports bar in Atlanta. Or … maybe it was the late 80s and I was dropping quarters in clangers at a video game arcade in a suburban shopping mall somewhere/anywhere in America. That’s the vibe I picked up on first entering Lazybones. Well that, and the fact that the music was ridiculously loud. Wacky “street art” graphics on the walls; DIY popcorn (choice of flavours: hot and spicy, Cheddar, sour cream and chive, or ranch); a large screen TV hanging on the wall; the smell of meat and fried things and beer. This was kids’ stuff for grown Ups.

Somewhat contrived and soullessly expedient (and a little bit Meat Liquor-y), I wouldn’t recommend going if you’re keen to have a heartfelt conversation or a proper three-course dinner. But if you’re looking for depth of experience, there are ancient churches and age old pubs, the Barbican, St Paul’s, etc – and all sorts of quieter spots and fancy restaurants – within easy reach of this Farringdon newbie. Depth of flavour and a fun place to drink, on the other hand, might be found at Lazybones.

I liked the place … and please keep reading to find out about Lazybones’ yum factor. Of course, it helped that they were playing music I appreciated (chicken wings and Parliament make for a tasty combo), but I’d have to be in the right mood to go again. And that ‘right mood’ would most likely come in the form of a craving for Lazybones’ food and drink.

DSC_3157

Not what I was expecting flavour wise (ie they weren’t Buffalo wings) but I loved the two day marinated and twice cooked “HOT!” wings made with the kitchen’s own recipe and served with a blue cheese dip. However, the hickory smoke and chipotle chilli BBQ wings fell short in my opinion. A side of French fries was awesome and ample (though “smothered” in Monterey cheese seemed pointless as it dried up super quick and wasn’t worth the extra pound charge). Falafel got a thumbs up from my non-carno dinner date. But it should be noted that veg options are limited; there’s no fish or seafood on the menu at all; and you’d really only want to visit Lazybones to sink your teeth in some meat. Menu highlights include hot dogs, pulled pork and brisket.

The rather North America-centric beer selection pleased my palate. I had one of my favourite brews actually, Moosehead Pale Ale, which went down exceptionally well with my wings. Lazybones serves Dixie Beer among its bottled drinks too. And as an expatriated son of the south, I was happy to have one just for the sake of sipping it in London. The bar also does cocktails. There was a Maple Old Fashioned on offer that almost pulled me away from the brewskis.

Portions here are legion. The menu is short and savoury and too the point. Mains hover around the £7 price point, cocktails around £8. Service is especially friendly and more than fast enough. Go for afterwork hijinks, laid back drinking and meaty nosh. Insist they get some video games.

Lazybones is located at Unit 5 Cowcross Street, EC1M 6DQ (walk through the alleyway by black phone box near the Starbucks and the Byron). Find out more at lazybones.uk.com.

Spice Routes #wineNcanapes with …

DSC_3139

I had a lot of fun at last night’s #wineNcanapes wine and Indian food “Spice Routes” pairing. It was one of those “get a bunch of bloggers in a room together” kind of nights. Such events can go either way in my opinion, but vibe last night was really friendly and enthusiastic. The food was absolutely gorgeous, the wine thoughtfully paired and the venue a comfortable and accommodating setting.

Putting on the show was a quartet of forces.

The hosts: NuffnangX and Edible Experiences
NuffnangX is a mobile platform that allows users to find blogs to read, follow blog updates and have conversations with bloggers on-the-go.

Edible Experiences helps foodies discover, compare and instantly book food and drink experiences in and around London.

The venue: School of Wok
School of Wok is a cookery school teaching the art of Oriental and Asian cuisine in Central London.

The food: Darjeeling Express
Darjeeling Express hosts Indian supper clubs and events featuring family recipes that go back four generations.

The wine: A Grape Night In
A Grape Night In is a London-based pop-up wine company.

The pairings:

  • Davenport Limney Estate Blanc de Blanc Reichensteiner, 2007, Sussex, England
    with vegetarian samosas and green spicy chutney
  • Quinta da Romeria Malvasia/Verelho, 2011, Douro Valley, Portugal
    with dahi puchka with tamarind chutney and yoghurt dressing
  • Cazes ‘Le Canon du Marchal’ Muscat/Viognier, 2011, Riversaltes, France
    with sweet tiger prawns in coconut milk
  • G D Vajra Barbera, 2010, Alba, Italy
    with chicken Seekh kebab with parathas
  • Fairview ‘Beryl Blanc’ Chenin Blanc, 2012, Paarl, South Africa
    with fruit chaat in lime, sugar and Himalayan rock salt

I loved all the dishes (and look forward to finding out more about Darjeeling Express’s upcoming supper club pop-up at Cinnamon Club). The pairings all intrigued. Some I thought were brilliant, others worth serious contemplation. The Portuguese wine was my fave – and if I would have had to pick one to drink through the evening with the dishes presented it would have been that one. But I thought the best team up of wine and dish was the Chenin Blanc with the salted fruit.

School of Wok (61 Chandos Place near Covent Garden) was a cool venue – and one I’d been meaning to visit for awhile. Still don’t know what it’s like to take a cooking class there, but the space was pleasant and seemed well provisioned.

Recipe: Mom’s Tuna Salad

DSC01892 - Recipe: Mom's Tuna Salad

A classic taste of my childhood, I love making this easy and cheap dish for myself. The recipe is based on something my mom often used to make for me when I was a kid. For her, it was a last minute pleaser that required little prep and minimal cleaning up. I always saw it as a special treat though, and from time to time I find I still crave for it. My version’s slightly different than the way Mom would make it, but I think it yields essentially the same level of yumminess at very little cost.

As basic and simple as it is, my mom’s tuna salad is really filling and super delicious.

MOM’S TUNA SALAD Yum

Ingredients (makes two servings unless you’re really hungry)

  • 1 Can 185g of tuna in brine or spring water;
  • 2 Medium-sized sweet and sour gherkins;
  • 2 Hard boiled eggs;
  • 2 Tablespoons of Mayonnaise (it’s gotta be Hellman’s if you want it like Mom made it);
  • Pinch of rock salt (Maldon Salt is fine);
  • Juice from a quarter wedge of a lemon;
  • Iceberg lettuce (to taste).

Method

What method? Drain a can of tuna, dump it in a bowl; chop up a couple of gherkins and hard boiled eggs (I like to keep them both kind of chunky) and add them to the bowl along with the mayo, lemon juice and salt. Mix well.

Serve

Serve on a bed of iceberg lettuce … or wrapped with a handful of shredded iceberg lettuce in a warmed up large flour tortilla … or on top of a piece of toast … or on its own in a the same bowl you where mixed it.

Depending on how hungry you are, this recipe can provide one substantial meal or enough for two main courses. Making a larger version of the dish is pretty straightforward, just proportionally add more of the same ingredients.

Great British Chefs – Cooking with Kids – Infographic

Great British Chefs recently launched a Cooking with Kids collection featuring more than 100 recipes from 21 of the UK’s greatest chefs, including Marcus Wareing, Nathan Outlaw, Lisa Allen and Frances Atkins. Every recipe has tips for how to get children involved in the kitchen, along with nutritional information to help ensure they’re getting a balanced diet.

For the launch, GBC also surveyed over 1,200 parents across Britain and found that 97% are in favour of the government’s recent proposals to make cooking lessons compulsory. Kids appear to like the idea too. 75% of parents said their kids love being the kitchen and often ask to cook.

GBC will publish the full results of their survey on their site Tuesday afternoon. Until then, have a look at this sneaky peek summary of some of the foodie findings (click on it for a bigger, easier to read version).
