“Remains of the Games” Gives You a Chance to Get Some Olympic Stuff on the Cheap
The Remains of the Games website offers “a chance to own fixtures, fitting and equipment used by some of the the most famous sporting personalities in the world.” Yep, London 2012 leftovers.
Run by Ramler Furniture (UK) Ltd, the major FF&E provider for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the sites offers a range of products at discounted prices that “were brand new, and will have been used on average for about 14 days” and “carry a label identifying that it has been used at London 2012 Olympics.” Need a coffee table with a bit of story behind it? How about a clipboard, a gazebo, John Lewis Partnership products or a four piece Athletes Bedroom Set?
As Westfield’s summer 2012 campaign goes, I was there. Well, so was this stuff. Remains of the Games is certainly worth a quick look. Just browsing the site for a few minutes, I saw some things priced nice that I could use in my flat.
Thanks to Westfield for sponsoring this post.

2013 Zagat Guide to London Restaurants Out Now
The 2013 Zagat Guide to London Restaurants is out now. With nearly 2,000 restaurants rated and reviewed by a record 9,583 surveyors, the 2013 guide is Zagat’s most comprehensive survey of the London dining scene to date. Survey participants sampled 1.1 million meals out in the past year, that’s almost 3,000 meals per day. The 2013 Zagat Guide ot London Restaurants is available now at all major retailers and will be soon online. In addition to the published 2013 guide, all the ratings and reviews are integrated throughout Google, including search, maps, Google+ and mobile.
The launch + awards presentation for the 2013 guide was held during breakfast yesterday at the newly opened Duck & Waffle with Zagat co-founders and co-chairs, Nina and Tim Zagat, hosting the event. Aloft the 40th floor of the Heron Tower, it was an appropriate venue for bestowing accolades to the crème de la crème of London resto.
The Duck & Waffle is definitely worth a visit – clean contemporary feel, huge windows, stunning views of London, the Thames and the surrounding countryside … even the zip up in the glass lift offers an overwhelming wow of an experience. D&W’s namesake dish (fried duck egg with roasted duck leg and mustard maple syrup on a waffle, £13) was delish and satisfying in an all day breakfast kinda way. Visit the restaurant online at duckandwaffle.com.
For me, the results of the survey mostly made sense. Pitt Cue Co. as best newcomer was expected, and I can’t argue with Mooli’s as best “buy”. Seeing Roganic come up a few times with high ratings in a few different categories synched perfectly with my experiences dining there. But, I must admit I scratched my head a few times at some of the survey’s other top eateries.
Find out more about the 2013 Zagat Guide to London Restaurants at zagat.com. Now, on to the winners of 2013 survey!

Recipe: Shiitake Steak Handrolls with Wasabi Mayo
Okay. Before I give the recipe, let me just say …
Please vote for me in Ainsley Harriott’s #SoupSearch Challenge! If I win I get to go on a foodie adventure to Japan. It’s easy to vote. Just click here and then cast your vote for me. And if you’re a UK resident, you’ll be in with a chance to win your own free trip to Marrakech.
Thank you. Now, back to my recipe.
Yep, my shiitake steak handroll recipe was a spur of the moment decision during a recent bloggers’ cook off sponsored by Ainsley Harriott Foods as part of the TV Chef’s #SoupSearch Challenge.
All I knew was that I had thirty minutes to cook (with Ainsley) with access to limited ingredients and that my recipe had to somewhat Japanese and it had to include beef. Japan was randonly chosen as my destination country. Other competitors were assigned Argentina, Spain, Turkey and Vietnam.
It was really cool getting to meet and cook alongside Ainsley. He’s a total pro but still super friendly, down to earth and hilarious. He, the film crew and the other bloggers all liked my dish. I was actually pleased with my impromptu recipe as well and definitely will make it for myself at home. It’s easy, quick and fairly inexpensive. Most importantly, it’s delicious!.
If you like this recipe, please be sure to vote for me in the Ainsley Harriott Foods’ #SoupSearch Challenge on Facebook. Bon appetite and doumo arigatou!
SHIITAKE STEAK HANDROLLS WITH WASABI MAYO Yum
Ingredients (makes 4 servings)
Miso marinated beef
- 500g diced beef
- 2 tsp brown miso paste
- 2 tsp mirin
- 2 tsp soy sauce
- 2 finely diced spring onions
- 2 crushed cloves of garlic
- pinch of grated ginger
- 1 finely diced small red chilli
- small handful of toasted sesame seeds
Stir fry garnish
- 150g finely diced fresh shiitake mushrooms
- 1 finely diced pak choi
- ¼ finely diced cucumber
- dash of soy sauce
- dash of mirin
- drop of sesame or cooking oil
Wasabi mayo
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- juice of one lime
- pinch of wasabi powder (to taste)
Rice
2 cups sushi rice or whichever rice your prefer
Nori
1 full sheet per roll
DIRECTIONS
- Cook the rice.
- Put the sesame seeds on a baking tray and place in the oven at low temperature. Mix up the marinade ingredients thoroughly in a large bowl. Toss in the beef and make sure all the pieces are equally marinated. Place the beef on a hot grill (or in a hot frying pan) and cook till done, sprinkling the toasted sesame seeds on top just before you finish. When done keep on the grill or place back in the bowl.
- Stir fry the garnish in a pan or wok with the sesame oil or preferred cooking oil at a moderate temperature. Start with the pak choi and the soy sauce and mirin. After a minute or two, throw in the mushrooms. Then after another minute or so add the cucumber. When done place in the bowl with the marinated beef.
- Keep about a tablespoon of rice to the side and put the rest of it in the bowl with the beef and the garnish. Mix well.
- For the mayo, simply mix all the ingredients in a small bowl together.
- For each handroll, take a sheet of nori. Start at the lower left hand corner of the sheet and roll into the shape of a cone. Roll it tightly lightly wetting the sheet with water around the “seams” to help seal it. It’s easiest to make one cone at a time.
- Add just enough rice (from the bit you put to the side) into the base of the cone and pack it down. Follow with a small drop of the mayo. Then fill with the rest of the ingredients, topping the roll with mayo or leaving on the side.
- Let cool. Eat with your hands!
Enjoy and don’t forget to vote 🙂

Paraymplic Pride and the London #HomeAdvantage
Wow. This epic London 2012 summer is done. Gone. Over. I’m hardly what you’d call a sports fan, but I really enjoyed having the Olympics – and the Paralympics – plop down right here in my town. From my perspective, it was a fascinating opportunity to, almost literally, watch something of global scale happening on my doorstep (you can see the Olympic Stadium and the Orbit Tower from my flat).
The few events I caught were pretty awesome, and I would very much like to say a huge thank you to British Airways for including me its Home Advantage Influencer Programme and inviting me out for some brilliant Olympic moments! I have a new appreciation for water polo and getting to catch the Finland v Brazil match for the gold medal in goalball was one of the coolest moments as a spectator in my life.
For me, the best thing about the Games was soaking up the atmosphere in the Olympic Park. I loved the vibe, especially during my Paralympics visit. Moseying around the park, passing through Stratford Station and even bumbling through Westfield, to see so many folks in wheelchairs or otherwise disabled among the fans was a real vision of inclusiveness that inspired me as much as (if not more than) the athletics. Well done London!
Mr and Ms Mango Tree UK: Ladyboy Competition 2012
Last night’s ladyboy competition at upscale Thai restaurant, Mango Tree, marked the ten year anniversary for this annual transgender beauty pageant. From “why is that man wearing a dress?” to “why does that woman have an Adam’s apple?” the show offered a great night of cheering for good natured – and glamourous – contests. Tropical cocktails, a seemingly endless stream of Thai cuisine canapés flowing from the kitchen and an enthusiast audience added to this year’s “Sport and the City” ambience and all but guaranteed an eleventh competion in 2013.
The winners of Mr and Ms Mango Tree contest? Miss Thailand, of course. As for the actual manly men on show, “Number Two” took home the trophy.

I’ve Got a Chance to Visit Japan for Free. Will You Help me Win?
Hi. I recently participated in a blogger cook-off sponsored by Ainsley Harriott Foods. There were four other contestants. All five of us are now vying for a chance to win an “all-inclusive trip of a lifetime to a top international foodie destination”. If the winner is me, I’m off to Japan. I really want to win. And that’s where you come in (I hope).
The competition is basically a Facebook popularity contest to see which blogger can get the most votes. Last I checked, I was losing – big time! If you could spare a few seconds to vote for me, I’d really appreciate it. You know I’ll take a ton of pics and return with a bunch of hilarious stories. And by the way, by voting for me or any of the other bloggers, you’ll be in with a chance to win your own free trip to Marrakech!
Keep reading for details about Ainsley Harriott’s #SoupSearch competition. Here’s how to vote for me:
- Click this link to visit the Ainsley Foods Facebook page.
- “Like” the #SoupSearch Competition app.
- Watch a short little video from Challenge Day last week with (a very goofy) me meeting and cooking with Ainsley Harriott.
- Vote by clicking on my name just below the video.
- On the next page, you can enter your details in order to enter a prize draw for a three night trip for two to Marrakech. The winner of this prize will be chosen after voting closes on the 17th of September 2012.
- After entering your details to win the trip to Marrakech, you will see the scores so far. You can only vote once and if you’ve voted and return to the app, you will see the current scores as percentages.
Voting will close 17 September. Once the scores have been added up, Ainsley et co will announce the winner. Please vote for me.
About the #SoupSearch Challenge
Ainsley Harriott’s #SoupSearch is all about exploring the flavours of the world to find his next Cup Soup flavour. If I win this thing, I would slurp my way around Japan for a week or so “exploring all the tastes on offer” and reporting back via the Ainsley Harriott Foods Facebook page and my own blog. Once back in London, I would visit to the Symington’s factory to create a Cup Soup flavour based on my the finding of my trip.
Vote for me please:

For the blogger cook off, I made Shiitake Steak Handrolls with Wasabi Mayo alongside Ainsley. The recipe, which I’ll publish in a few days, was my idea (spur of the moment too!). I was pretty happy with the results and everybody who got a bite of my dish, loved it.
I’d never met my competition before, but they were all lovely folks. You should have a look at their blogs.

Mango Tree’s Annual Ladyboy Beauty Pageant Returns This Sunday
It’s back and if anything like in the past few years promises to be an absolute hoot. Upscale Thai restaurant, Mango Tree, will host its annual Mr and Miss Mango Tree UK Ladyboy competition this Sunday. The theme this year? Sport and the City.
From 6.30pm till late, guests can enjoy a night of glammed up fun as contestants strut their stuff in three rounds before a panel of VIP and celebrity judges. Ladyboy entrants will compete for the Miss Mango Tree UK 2012 crown, as well as the prizes of £500 cash (plus a £100 meal at Mango Tree) for the winner; £300 for the runner up; and £200 for third place. Winners from the last four years have gone on to compete in Thailand at the Miss International Queen contest. Alongside the he-shes, male contenders will compete for the same cash prizes and the title of Mr Mango Tree UK 2012.
Hosting this year’s event is Eastenders and Coronation Street actress, Michelle Collins. There’ll be a variety of cabaret performances and live deejaying “all set against a backdrop of Olympic-themed decorations” too along with tropical cocktails and Thai canapés available throughout the night.
Mango Tree is located at 46 Grosvenor Place, SW1X 7EQ. Doors open at 6.30pm. The competition kicks off at 7.30 and lasts till midnight. Tickets cost £17 in advance or £20 at the door. To book ahead (or sign up to compete) call the restaurant at 02078231888. Visit mangotree.org.uk for more details.

Sponsored Video: Rekorderlig Swedish School: How It All Began
Ever wish you were a little more Scandi? All things Scandinavian – and especially Swedish – seem to be as hip as ever in the UK these days.
Indeed, there’s a fantastic little Swedish cafe – Cooper & Wolf – that opened up about ajust down the street from my flat in Hackney. I don’t know the whole story behind this new and already very popular eatery, but from my perspective it seemed to have just appeared overnight. Whatever the case, their pickled herring is delish and was undoubtedly made by experienced hands. And then there’s the new Icelandic owned Tommi’s Burger Joint that’s recently started trading in Marylebone. Maybe the best burgers I’ve had in London (that weren’t made by myself that is).
Those are but two of the many fresh and tasty examples of Anglo-Nordic love filling the London air at the moment. And as much as we here seem to want access to Scandi stuff, enterprising and proud Scandinavians appear ready and willing to grant us access to their culture and traditions. Enter: Olof Håkansson.
Rekorderlig Swedish School (Svenska Skolan) is the ultimate manifestation of one man’s “Beautifully Swedish” vision. Together with his team of teachers, Olof Håkansson – founder of the Svenska Skolan – has created a place which recognises that everyone could be beautifully Swedish if given the essential techniques inherent in every Swede.
Olof believes everyone has a beautifully Swedish side, and he wants to help you find yours at his Swedish School.

London Daily Photo and the Nokia 808 PureView
From the 27th of July to the last day of August, I dedicated my London Daily Photo series to trying out Nokia’s 808 PureView mobile. As a camera, this little baby packs a wallop and promises an exciting future for mobile photography enthusiasts.
My month plus with the 808 proved especially fruitful. I was generally happy with all the shots I got out the mobile … and ended up with way more than the few weeks’ worth needed for my series. You can have a look at all my “London 2012 with the Nokia 808 PureView” photographs in this Flickr set:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/tikichris/sets/72157630692987100/with/7713475778/
Yeah, my tinkering around with the 808 coincided nicely with the “biggest show on earth” coming to town. And I took full advantage of every op I could to capture the good, bad, ugly or otherwise of the Olympics being held in London. It was certainly a visually exciting time to be in London. I hope you enjoyed my documenting of the time.
In my initial test drive post about the 808, I suggested the still image editor had “some limitations” but was “still way awesome.” Days later after getting to know the capabilities of the device a little better, I changed my mind. For something that fits in the back pocket of my jeans, the editing functions are amazing. Keep in mind while looking at any of my PureView pics that any editing was done on the camera.
The cropping was phenomenal. The colour adjusting etc – wow. In another league compared to the pre-set, non-app stuff of other smart phone cameras! The battery seemed to have a longer life than what I’m accustomed to with similar devices – and most days lasted well past when I thought it would be running low.
Obviously, the 41 megapixel sensor with Carl Zeiss lens impressed. Really, a device so small yet powerful that let me share a big, crisp file with the online world so quickly offered an experience that was all together different that that with other phones, similarly sized compacts and even DSLRs.
For discrete street photography and the ability to travel light, this smart phone cannot be beat. It was, often and in a number of aspects, an ideal camera for my London 2012 shooting.
I enjoyed shooting with the Nokia 808 PureView so much that I kept going with it for a few extra days. Even today’s daily photo post was shot with the PureView. I’m sure it’ll come in handy again, and I’m keeping readily accessible and charged at the top front of my gadget drawer. To be sure, you’ll see more shots from my 808 appearing on my blog in the near future.

Noteworthy London Burgers (OneTravel)
Burger mania has swept the British capital in the beefiest of ways. Hardly an exhaustive list (and I’m sticking with only restaurants – not street vendors – for this particular write up), here’s a quick look at a few of London’s more noteworthy burger flippers.
Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012 – Herzog & de Meuron with Ai Weiwei at Hyde Park (OneTravel)
Compared to past commissions, the 2012 pavilion is more subtle and has received considerable criticism for delivering less “wow” (and for its pool of water unintentionally drawing insects). Still, it’s a contemplative and restful place (and the bugs weren’t bad at all during this blogger’s visit) and feels less intrusive and big for the sake of being big as previous pavilions.
