Me and Londonist? Nope.

DSC_9866

Yes, I was a contributing editor there for a number of years, but if you are a PR, marketer, business owner or anyone else contacting me about  potential Londonist coverage, please read this brief post.

Although it’s now been several months since I moved on, I am still receiving lots of invitations and requests to review stuff as The Londonist. I thought by now I had done a thorough job letting folks know I’d stopped being a contributing editor for that site, but apparently I didn’t. So …

NOPE

  • I am not associated with The Londonist nor do I plan to contribute to that site in any capacity for the foreseeable future.
  • I will not pass your info or request on to anyone at The Londonist, and I certainly won’t give you anyone’s personal contact details.
  • If you contact me via my personal email address and don’t specify that you’re trying to contact someone from The Londonist, I will assume your message doesn’t pertain to that site.
  • Whatever you’ve contacted me about, there’s a strong possibility it might fit with the content of my own long running blog (yes this one you’re reading now) or one of my clients’ sites or publications. I’m proud to contribute to all the clients I write or photograph for (some of them I’ve been doing stuff with for years), and I’m particularly chuffed by all the success that’s come my way recently. I’m having more fun, making more money and writing more freely than, say, this time last year or even back at the beginning of 2012.

Please take a second to give my blog a browse and to read my About page. A number of PR agencies and businesses have already decided to ‘take a chance’ with me and have been more than pleased with the results.

Thanks! Have fun,
Chris

Top Five Walks in Pembrokeshire, Wales (CheapOair)

DSC_9384

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in southwestern Wales is one of the most stunning coastlines in the world. Seriously! I say that with little if any hyperbole. Just back from a week relaxing in the Welsh countryside, I was blown away by Pembrokeshire’s dramatic scenery. The juxtaposition of its jagged and jutting coast crashing into the rolling and gentle farmland was actually breathtaking.

Help Build the Olympic “LEGO-acy” All this Week for Free at Westfield Stratford City

DSC01408
Photo of the Lego-ized London 2012 Olympic Stadium

East Village, the new residential neighbourhood located on the site of the Athletes’ Village inside the newly named Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, is to be constructed “in Lego” as part of a 3sqm replica of London’s Olympic skyline, offering a sneak peek at the shape of things to come when East Village opens to the public in the summer of 2013.

And the super cool thing thing about this that you can help build the scaled-down model!

From 9am onwards at Westfield Stratford City from today (25 September) to the 1st of October, members of the public are invited to join in the building. Participation is completely free. There are Lego prizes to be won by the best young builders. And professional Lego builders (is that a dream job or what?) will be on hand co-ordinating the project.

LDP 2012.08.00.0a – Village
Athletes’ Village during the Games: what will it look like in Lego?

The model, which will be constructed over the course of 400 hours, will provide the first-ever detailed view of the heart of East Village, which was closed to the public for the duration to the Games. The scene will include Chobham Academy – the state-of-the-art new education campus for 1,800 students – as well as the East Village Health and Wellbeing Centre, and entertainment venues within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Find out more at eastvillagelondon.co.uk.

One Last #SoupSearch Request. Am I Going to Japan?

Harriott-Foods-Aug29th-403 (Large)

Looks like I still have a decent lead in Ainsley Harriott’s #SoupSearch Challenge. But my margin’s eroding bit by bit each day. The contest ends tomorrow, September 25th, at 11.59pm … which seems like an excruciatingly long time away for me right now. If you haven’t voted yet, would like to share with your friends or have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s the link:
https://www.facebook.com/ainsleyharriottfoods/app_479532585404765

To all you fine people who took the time out of your busy day to read any of my related #SoupSearch content, to vote and pass the word on about this competition, I sincerely appreciate it. I’m pretty sure that, at the very least, me bumbling around Japan should provide you with a chuckle or two once I’m back.

And even if I don’t win, this experience has been a lot of fun for me. But who am I kidding? I so want to win this trip to Japan. So, please vote for me in Ainsley Harriott’s #SoupSearch Challenge! It’s easy. Just click here and then cast your vote for me. And if you’re a UK resident, you’ll be in with a chance to win your own free trip to Marrakech.

Thanks!

Going Offline for Awhile but Thanks for the #SoupSearch Surge!

Picture 10

Just a very quick word of thanks to everyone who’s been voting for me in Ainsley Harriott’s #SoupSearch Challenge. I have a definite lead over the competition with 33% of the vote at the moment (not bad considering there are five us competing!). I am so exciting that I might actually win this trip to Japan.

Anyway, the other thing I wanted to say in this post is that I’m going to be offline for most of the next week and trying to commune with nature and my girlfriend (who is being incredibly supportive about this comp – maybe she’s looking forward to me being on the other side of the world for a little while?). So you don’t have to worry about me blathering too much more about Ainsley Harriott and my quest for a freebie trip abroad.

The contest ends on the 25th. If you haven’t voted yet, would like to share it with your friends or have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s the link:

https://www.facebook.com/ainsleyharriottfoods/app_479532585404765

Keep in mind that if you’re a UK resident when you vote you become automatically eligible to win a three nights holiday for two in Marrakech.

You are so awesome for giving me a hand with this! Thank you so much!
Chris

Chobani Greek Yoghurt Launches in the UK

DSC01782

Greek yoghurt brand, Chobani, has launched in 200 Tescos throughout the UK. Fat free and with 14g of protein per serving, Chobani is the top selling yoghurt brand in the US and has raked in more than $1 billion over the past five years. After this initial launch period, “rapid expansion” across UK is expected … and soon.

I tagged along to a “high tea” launch party earlier today. It wasn’t the first time I’d come across Chobani, but it was the first time I’d tasted it. Good stuff. The yoghurt comes in six flavours: strawberry, peach, black cherry, blood orange, pomegranate and plain with a recommended retail price of 89p for a 70g pot. All the flavours were tasty. I especially liked the pomegranate and the plain and reckon 89p is a reasonable price. Probiotic, high protein, low fat and creamy – I can see the product taking up residence in my fridge.

And yes, the high tea (at Soho House!) featured treats actually made with Chobani including spicy salmon cornmeal cakes (probably my fave), coriander sauce, scones and quiche. I was impressed, took home the recipes and hope to recreate some of the dishes.

There’s a lot more to the Chobani story than me trying and liking it. Hamdi Ulukaya, prez and CEO of Chobani, has been called “the Steve Jobs of yoghurt” by Forbes and has a bit of rags-to-riches story behind his success. Today, Chobani donates 10% of its profits to the Shepherd’s Gift Foundation. More wholesomeness at chobani.co.uk.

Journey to the Land of Ham and Cheese

DSC_6818

Over the next few weeks, I hope to serve a generous portion of stories and pictures from my recent visit to Parma, Italy. I’ll try not to ham it up or say anything too cheesy while sharing the best bits from my trip, but as far as foodie destinations go, Parma and the surrounding countryside of Emilia Romagna were a slice above most places I’ve had the pleasure to eat my way through (have my puns started to grate on your nerves yet?).

I’m not a bucket list kind of guy. Some of the most exciting and meaningful experiences in my life were completely unexpected and unfolded in ways that never could have been compressed to be mere line items on some grocery list of wishful thinking. I believe the best moments in life are often coupled with a strong element spontaneity and that a flexible approach towards living yields more fun and opportunity than keeping such intense focus on future goals that you loose sight of the good things around you now.

DSC_7344

Still, if I’d have had a bucket list, Parma would have been on it. It’s one destination I’ve wanted to see for a very long time … since I was a little kid actually. The city’s got a cheese named after it for Pete’s sake – a cheese of such value that locals put wheels of it in bank vaults. I remember spaghetti nights around the family table as a child pondering the grated cheese and why it was so different – and so much better than – the other cheeses I’d tried.

DSC_7030

Of course, the local ham ain’t half bad either. Do you remember the first time you tried Parma ham? I do actually. Proscuitto wasn’t all that accessible in the small north Georgia town when I grew up, but moving to New York as a young man, it became a staple of my diet after my first bite at a neighbourhood deli. Thin slices of melt-in-your-mouth savouriness? Per favore! Years later living in London with roughly a dozen or so visits to Italy behind me, Parma ham seems a little more commonplace. Nevertheless, to this day it rocks my palate each and every time I’m fortunate enough to eat some.

DSC_7155

My recent (as in last week) journey to Parma was an effort to continue to “discover the origin” of some of Europe’s most delicious foods. Discover the Origin is an Italo-Franco-Portuguese alliance united to raise awareness about five of Europe’s 1,873 Protected Designation of Origin products: Port and Douro wines, Burgundy wines (more on Burgundy here), Parma ham and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

The fact that two of these iconic treats come from the same small region says a lot about how wonderful it. To be sure, the ham and cheese are exquisite in Parma. The shops, bars and restaurants offer them proudly, along with all sorts of other tasty delights as well. And there’s great – if under appreciated – wines from the area too. Parma’s as scrumptious a spot as any I’ve come across.

DSC_6822

Keep an eye out for more posts about why Parma and its food and drink are so special. Until my next post, feel free to take a look all the photos I took during my trip:
