A Chocolate Festival to Savour
Great British Chefs, 11 December 2011
Delicious strolls down memory lane and Christmas shopping aside, I took my visit as an opportunity to indulge in some of the more savoury chocolate creations on offer. I was there to be intrigued after all. Chocolate risotto balls? Chilli con carne … con chocolate?

Possibly some of the last photos to be taken by the public as the area is soon to enter “lockdown” for final preparations, here’s a peek inside the Olympic Athletes’ Village, or “East Village” as the project’s developers and owners would prefer you to call the place, as they make sure everything stays in line for when the 2,000 plus units are “ready for living by 2013” when the pop-up village enters post-Olympics legacy phase.

Hanging out and Smoking with Hansen & Lydersen (Great British Chefs)
Hanging out and Smoking with Hansen & Lydersen
Great British Chefs, 7 December 2011
Hanging around Stoke Newington in a back alley of an old industrial lot smoking … no this wasn’t the scene of shiftless youths loitering along the High Street in search of some trouble to get in. It was just Great British Chefs blogger, Chris Osburn, sitting in on the few days salmon smoking process with Ole Martin Hansen of Hansen & Lydersen, trying to figure out why his smoked salmon tastes so gorgeous.

Street Market Focus: Chapel Market (CheapOair)
Street Market Focus: Chapel Market
CheapOair, December 6, 2011
… largest street market in Islington and one of the most traditional in London. Both the market and the street exude old school working class charm. Still, all the creature comforts and conveniences of 21st century Britain are at hand, three supermarkets, “high street” retailers such as the Gap, a multi-screened cinema and lots of specialty shops and boutiques are all but a jaunt away.

What’s for Lunch? Pieminister, Boxpark (Londonist)
What’s for Lunch? Pieminister, Boxpark
Londonist, December 6, 2011 at 12.00 pm
As mentioned here last week, the world’s first pop-up mall has opened in Shoreditch. Along with all the retailers, a number of eateries are present to sling a variety of hash within the shipping containers. One such outlet is Pieminister. Hardly a newbie, Pieminister’s been around awhile with a host of pie shops all over England. This new one at Boxpark arrives in perhaps its most trendsetting (or would that be trend-settled) of locations. And similar to its landlord’s concept, Pieminister offers a compact and economic product with differentiation occurring inside each standardised exterior.

Good Stuff
Before I lose track and the frenetically festive season ramps up, here’s a list of list of some things I’ve come across lately and have really enjoyed but for whatever reason they didn’t get much mention on this blog, my tikichris-to-go Tumblr blog or one of my client’s blogs.
Fashion for Freedom: Interesting fashion show for a good cause (MAP) with brilliantly edgy set design by Kemey Lafond 🙂
Domestic Sluttery: Went to Anova Book’s launch of the Domestic Sluttery’s book. The book looks really nice and the party was fun.
Westminster Cathedral: Found myself with some time to kill before a meeting in Victoria, and popped into this lovely cathedral for the first time. There was a lovely choir singing and it’s beautiful inside. For a brief moment, I felt like I was on holiday in France or Spain.
Hackney Picturehouse: Caught a movie here on Friday. It’s been open for a couple of months now. I actually wasn’t so impressed with the flick I saw (Scorsese’s Hugo). However, I was really pleased with my movie going experience. Spacious, comfy and walking distance from my flat – Hackney Picturehouse is awesome.
East India Company: Checked out the EIC’s Christmas open house to the press. If you’re looking for some fancy teas, coffess, jams, marmalades, biscuits and condiments to give as gifts, they’ve got the goods in a lavish range of gift boxes, hampers and trunks.
Lea River Walk: Yet another reason to love living in Clapton. I’ve been really enjoying weekend rambles along the Lea River towpath. Baby coots, wide open spaces, marshes … yeah.

It’s the most-talked-about-new-shopping-mall-built-from-shipping-containers in London’s history. Boxpark opens in Shoreditch [today], bringing ‘more than sixty carefully chosen fashion, arts and lifestyle brands’ to the derelict land around the similarly blocky Shoreditch station.

Wine of the Month: 2010 Berrys’ Chianti, Badia a Coltibuono, Tuscany
Yes, I’m well aware that it’s been more than a year and a half since my last WOTM review. Hey, just trying to live life these days sometimes gets in the way of trying to live the good life – let alone find the time to blog about it. Anyway, the series is back, and appropriately enough, I’m quite thankful to be reporting on a winner of wine as Christmas nears and 2011 draws to a close.
So without further ado, I present Berry Bros and Rudd’s 2010 Berry’s Chianti. This dry, light to medium bodied 2010 blend of Canaiolo, Colorino and mostly Sangiovese from historic Chianti Classico estate Badia a Coltibuono accompanied my Thanksgiving dinner last week. And I’d like to think it did so exceptionally well.
Red berry notes, vinified without oak, certified organic, pesticide and herbicide free – it’s one for every palate and complementary to a range of dishes. It certainly held its own and then some alongside my T Day turkey as well as any wine at any price point probably could have. At £10.95 per bottle or twelve bottles at £9.86 each for a total of £118.32, it’s a bargain.
For product details and more, visit Berry Bros & Rudd online at www.bbr.com or stop by their shop at 3 St James’s Street, SW1A 1EG.

Photo Story: Leith Docks (Urban Travel Blog)
Photo Story: Leith Docks
Urban Travel Blog, Dec 1st, 2011
Edinburgh’s port, Leith, offers visitors to this little slice of waterfront Scotland a microcosm of 21st century Britain. Post-industrial, mixed use, but largely residential with lots and lots of restaurants, pubs and bars and easily accessible from the city centre (just a short, cheap cab or very straightforward bus ride away), Leith is an ideal spot to station yourself when in Edinburgh. There’s also a wealth of accommodation options, from a seemingly endless list of B&Bs to a four-star stay at a former 19th century Seaman’s Mission cum Malmaison hotel. It’s hip round here too. Kinda like a quaint Edinburgh answer to Shoreditch or Williamsburg.

Some London Pubs with Fireplaces (CheapOair)
Some London Pubs with Fireplaces
CheapOair, December 1, 2011
Brrr … Its cold outside. Gather some friends, grab a pint and cozy up with this warming list of London pubs with crackling wood-burning fireplaces. The pubs listed here are all within walking distance of each other and all fairly close to Tube stations. So maybe you could bundle up and go for a wintry pub crawl. It doesn’t snow all that much in London, but if you’re in town off of a London flight when it does, nestling into a pub with a fireplace can add a bit of Dickensian cheer to your time in London.

Can eating in an alleyway ever be good? The Long Table thinks it can.
Great British Chefs, 30 November 2011
Not for the agoraphobic but a deffo for those keen to keep their hipster cred high and their bellies full on a budget, London’s only outdoor food night market has launched down a grubby Dalston alleyway and brought with it big name restaurants and chefs, London street food mainstays and newbie vendors alike along with a fully stocked bar and live music. Called The Long Table and featuring Nuno Mendes‘ “hand-picked selection of London’s finest street food”, the market opened last Friday the 25th November and is set go every Friday from 6pm to 1am until Christmas.

For fans of Deadmau5, last night’s open air concert at Milbank Tower was a bit of dream come true (if only for slightly less than an hour). Even for those not so enamored with the offerings of the Canadian electro/house musician, the show provided plenty of neato visuals to stop them in their tracks … Photos by Chris Osburn and Kemey Lafond …

Street Market Focus: eat.st at King’s Cross
OneTravel, Nov 17, 2011
Being so close to King’s Cross St Pancras Station means locals and visitors alike are able to indulge in the eat.st treats with ease and convenience. If you’re taking the Eurostar to or from Paris or one of its other continental Europe destinations and have a bit of time to kill, the new market is just a couple of minutes’ walk away. Even if you’re not hungry, ambling about the market with its vibrantly coloured vans and stalls would be a fun way to break up the monotony of waiting for your train. And if you’re just arriving in London for the first time, grabbing a quick bite at eat.st would make a brilliant introduction to the world within the world that is London.
