Taking Personal Stock
As I alluded to a few days ago in an admittedly schmaltzy ‘Thanksgiving-y’ blog post, the year’s winding down, and I’m taking stock of how it all went. And if you must know, it was an exceptionally splendid year for the most part. As 2011 comes to a close I’m starting to think less of how it will end up and more and more about what 2012 is going to be like and what I want to be doing differently in the upcoming year.
One thing I’m pondering as a new year approaches is if it’s a good idea to start investing in the stock market again. I’m considering a range of options – looking into Exchange Traded Funds, online trading, the bond market … maybe even putting some cash into an up-and-coming local business.
I used to have a small but healthy portfolio of stocks almost a decade ago. I stepped back, mostly for personal reasons and to focus on other things … and luckily just in time to avoid the mega meltdown of the Great Recession which, depending on your sources, has finally yielded to a slow recovery, actually never ended at all and won’t for a long time to come or ended only to return with double dipping vengeance. Whatever the case, I’m sure I don’t have to tell anybody that economic conditions are a hell of a lot different than they were back at the beginning of the 2000s. Still, I reckon the same fundamentals apply to smart investing now as they did back then – probably even more so these days.
I ain’t got much money to play with though, and unlike my politics, I’m rather conservative with money. I’m not looking to gamble or seeking any short term reward – just set something aside for a rainy day and old age.
Before you know it, we’ll be celebrating another New Year’s Eve. And if 2012 plays out anything like this past year has, it will seem like no time at all before I’m sitting down writing end of the year blog posts again. Maybe this time next year I’ll be adding a thankful note to those last of 2012 posts about a bump in my savings for the future?

William Curley’s ‘Couture Chocolate’ Afternoon Tea at The Halkin
Great British Chefs, 25 November 2011
Transcribing the lushly illustrated pages of his newly published first book, Couture Chocolate, to the swish contemporary setting of an afternoon tea at Belgravia’s stylish The Halkin hotel, William Curley brings his refined decadence to the fingertips of gourmet choco-fiends looking to add some extra ‘umph’ to the ever so civilised afternoon tea.

Thanks!
2011 is winding down. I’m making plans for Christmas and 2012. But before all the festive season hubbub begins, today is Thanksgiving. And I’ve got plenty to be thankful for.
I live in a great little flat that I bought with someone who’s as sweet as can be and seems to really enjoy having me around. We love our London neighbourhood and have settled in with hardly any hassle. Work’s been fairly steady all year and for the most part a lot of fun. I’ve travelled a bit, made some new friends, built stronger relationships with old friends, seen plenty of cool art and eaten exceptionally well. I think my photography’s improved since this time in 2010, and I feel pretty good about how things have been going with this here blog. All in all, 2011 has been fantastic.
I know this year is one that many folks will be happy to see the back of. For me, it’s been one of the best years of my life. Thanks to everyone who’s made the past several months so awesome. If you’re reading this post and wondering if I’m referring to you, odds are I am. Here’s to more good times in 2012.
Thanksgiving in London (CheapOair)
Thanksgiving in London
CheapOair, November 24, 2011
Not nearly as ironic as throwing an American Independence Day/4th of July party in England, still the idea of celebrating an American Thanksgiving in London might seem a bit out of place. Nevertheless, with lots of US citizens living and working in the UK capital and plenty of other Americans taking advantage to book flights to London, a proper Turkey Day feast is easy enough to find and enjoy in this historic and dynamic city … Here’s a list of a few noteworthy restaurants putting on T-Day feasts in London …

What’s for Lunch? Pacific Social Club, Lower Clapton (Londonist)
What’s for Lunch? Pacific Social Club, Lower Clapton
Londonist, November 22, 2011 at 11:30 am
Pacific Social Club is self-described on its Facebook page as a “coffee shop/social club/analogue recording library/drop-out centre/mixtape factory” that serves “nice coffee, ice coffee, ice tea, self help books, exotic sandwiches, coconuts, Nigerian soft drinks, cake … and healthy breakfasts.” It’s a sweet little place on a rough little road where an inexpensive lunch can be had and the only downside that Londonist noticed during our Monday midday meal is PSC’s own apparent success; this fairly new eatery seems to be as popular as it is tiny, and grabbing a seat may prove difficult.

Talking ‘First Class’ Turkey for Thanksgiving
Great British Chefs, 21 November 2011
Love it or hate it, there’s a good chance you’re going to be tucking into a roasted turkey sometime soon. The mandatory centrepiece for a proper British Yuletide feast here, turkey isn’t necessarily a maligned meat but is often considered to be among the most ‘meh’ of main courses.

New Restaurant Review: MEATliquor
Londonist, November 21, 2011 15 13:00 pm
From the folks that brought the Meatwagon to the London masses comes a stationary brick and mortar meat offering. For carnivorous cravings and crafty cocktails, MEATliquor is well worth considering. Just don’t go expecting this to be a fast food heaven.

Heathrow Express (CheapOair)
Heathrow Express
CheapOair, November 17, 2011
Heathrow Express is the fastest and most convenient way to get to and from London Heathrow Airport and Central London. With no traffic jams, taxi queues, or multiple stops to slow you down, you (along with an average of 16,000 other passengers a day) can be in the very heart of London, or inside your terminal at Heathrow, within only 15 minutes. Yes, the mere quarter of an hour train journey connects all of Heathrow Airport’s terminals to London Paddington Station. However, it should be noted that you’ll spend an extra 10 minutes or so getting to Terminal 5 and that Terminal 4 is reached by a quick, regular and free shuttle train from the other terminals.

Foraging, Mark Hix and Whisky (Locally Sourced)
Foraging, Mark Hix and Whisky
Locally Sourced, November 15, 2011
The idea behind our expedition was to get us city slickers close ‘to the wild seas of Skye, where Talisker is made, without leaving our Southern shores’. And it was kind of a fun trip all in all. If soggy conditions weren’t necessarily ideal for grabbing wild grub on the beach, the stormy weather and massive waves crashing over Lyme Regis’s famed Cobb harbour wall were evocative and certainly illustrative of why authors Jane Austen and John Fowles placed the desperate heroines of their books in such a dramatic setting. Of course, once off the beach and warmed up in Hix Oyster & Fish House with its sweeping views over the rooftops of Lyme Regis, the undulating sea, dreary horizon, angry skies and blustery winds effectively created a mood most conducive to sipping some smoky single malt from the west Scotland island of Skye.
