King’s Boulevard isn’t just London’s newest street. It’s also host of London’s newest street market. Britain’s first (and probably only?) street food collective, eat.st launched “eat.st at King’s Cross” on this fledgling thoroughfare a few weeks back, scooping up a couple of other firsts in the process. The market is the first dedicated street food zone in London and serves as the first permanent base for the eat.st collective.

It’s a very good idea to come hungry as a trip to Borough Market is an opportunity to try a wide range of treats. Strong contenders for the best raclette, falafel, hot dogs, wild boar sausage, paella etc etc etc may all be devoured here. And should you fail to find anything that strikes your fancy offered at a vendor’s stall, the many restaurants, cafes and pubs expand the options to ensure all tastes are catered to (sushi, oysters, fine chocolate – you name it!).

Some of London’s most traditional, beautiful and oldest pubs just happen to also be some of the cheapest and most conveniently located. It’s true. Samuel Smith, a traditional Yorkshire based brewery established in 1758, owns and operations a chain of more than 300 pubs throughout England, a number of which are located in London.

Perfectly Grilled Meat and More at Argentine Steakhouse A La Cruz (CheapOair)

Perfectly Grilled Meat and More at Argentine Steakhouse A La Cruz

Being situated in the villagey neighbourhood of Clerkenwell – home to some of London’s oldest and most celebrated pubs, a few nearby Michelin starred and celebrity chef restaurants, numerous coffee snob cafes and a vibrant foodie approved street market – means that if an eatery intends to stay in business around here, they’ve got to at least be as good as the competition. A La Cruz is possibly the best place for a steak in this area of Central London and arguably in the whole of the city. Everything else on the menu is delicious too – the empanadas, the cooked provolone, the lamb … oooh the slow cooked juicy, tender lamb!

De La Panza is a few-week’s-old Argentine bodegón in the heart of De Beauvoir Town. Headed up by front of house Gaston Carrano, who helped with the set up of Broadway Market’s Buen Ayre Restaurant and Santa Maria del Sur in Battersea, it’s an attractive and elegant restaurant and, judging from the buzz during our Friday night visit, a welcome addition to the dining options on Southgate Road.

Housebites is a new takeway business that’s been going for about a month. It works as an online marketplace where customers can find and order from nearby chefs who cook up food in their own homes and then deliver it. Menus continually change based upon which chefs are on duty and what meals they’re cooking that day. Last week, Londonist gave Housebites a try and, overall, we were pleased with our meal.

DSCF1825 - Chargrilled Mahi-Mahi at Kua Aina Hawaiian Burger and Sandwich Grill, Carnaby Street, Hawaii

Smartly situated for Carnaby shoppers and cosy enough for a lunch time sit down, this months-old burger and sandwich grill appears to be a popular pit stop from what we could tell on our midweek visit. Prices are a bit dear for what amounts to a hyped-up burger joint with some (admittedly very relaxing and hum-along-able) Hawaiian music piped through. However, the menu yields tasty and large-portioned value, and orders are served up quick.

More on Sofas

IMG00698-20111017-1254

A couple of weeks back I was blogging about a rather epic struggle to get an old but otherwise perfectly fine sofa up some flights of stairs and through a few not so sofa-friendly doorways in my new flat. The struggle was ultimately successful but took a bit more strategic thinking and elbow grease than I had presumed it would. I was really worried the sofa wasn’t going to fit through the last door it was wedged so snuggly into it. Immediate concerns of how to get that two seater sucker back out to the street and then figuring out what to do with it once removed from the building flooded my mind, along with wondering what I was going to purchase to take its place.

Where would I go? What would be a good price to pay? Was I going to be able to find something that fit in my new space.

There’s a whole universe of sofa and furniture related knowledge to tap into out there on the internet including store sites such as CSL sofas. I reckon I’d have scoured the net before deciding on a purchase or to visit a showroom. I know for sure I would have measured the spaces in my flat and the height and width of its doors before even considering any new furniture.

Luckily, I didn’t have to resort to buying something new and I’m now laid back with feet propped up in my good old slightly-too-big-for-my-new-flat couch. It’s comfy too – and goes nicely with the rest of the flat’s décor. Still, I suppose it’s good to know shopping for a new sofa would have been easy enough even if I’d have had to do it sitting on the floor.

Oh yeah, and here’s a link to that original Sofa Bed Blues post.

Experimental Food Society Spectacular offers a delectable & weird line up of events

Ever tried (or even contemplating) camel milk ice cream? Would you wear clothing that was designed to be eaten? What in the world is chocolate architecture … and how soon can you eat it after construction? Those are but a few of the questions popping into Chris Osburn’s head (Great British Chefs’ Guest Blogger) as he read over the events and exhibitions on offer at the upcoming Experimental Food Society Spectacular.
