Street Market Focus: Chatsworth Road Market
CheapOair, October 14, 2011
For a total East End immersion deep in the depths of the ever up and coming London borough of Hackney, it would be wise to consider going for a ramble round Chatsworth Road’s street market where not only can you pick up your weekly groceries (from top end delicacies to rock bottom priced sundries) and shop for some vintage hipster threads (from both charity shops and fashionable boutiques) but also to join the “Kim Chi Cult” and down a kim chi burger, sample a savoury sweet potato burrito and even learn how to break dance.

Planning a visit to London with your kids and have hopes of teaching them a little about the place before the trip begins? Or maybe you’re looking for something “on topic” for them to read that will keep them entertained the long flight to London and then provide them with a great reference for once you’re actually on the ground and sightseeing in England?

Review: Frieze Art Fair 2011

The fair feels bigger than ever this year but perhaps a little less exuberant than in the past, undoubtedly due in part to the perilous economy on both sides of the Atlantic. But everyone is here once again, which must mean that there’s still a certain amount of optimism.

… The roof is home of urban apiary, Bermondsey Street Bees, where its several thousand honey producing residents not only enjoy enviable views of the Shard and surrounding area but live in cedar hives. They forage up to three miles around on a wide variety of flowers and trees in parks, allotments, gardens, railway sidings, window boxes and even wasteland. The result is deliciously floral and, perhaps ironically, without the insecticides and herbicides which can blight bees zipping around in the countryside.

What’s for Lunch? Rosalind’s Kitchen, Little Portland Street
Londonist, October 12, 2011 at 11:30 am
Rosalind’s Kitchen is a small but lovely take-out cafe sourcing seasonal ingredients from specialist suppliers for its daily changing menu. The location is central and the prices are affordable and in line with what you’d expect for a quality meal so near Oxford Circus and Regent Street (a main and salad will set you back £8).

Good Stuff
Remember my last “Good Stuff” post? That was published just over a month ago. Lots more stuff’s been happening since then. And the wonderful thing is that most that stuff’s been good stuff. So, as with that last post back in September, here’s another list of things I’ve come across lately and have really enjoyed but for whatever reason they didn’t get much mention on this blog, my tikichris-to-go Tumblr blog or one of my client’s blogs.
The Skin I Live in: Is it even still being screened? If so and you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth checking out. Vintage Almodavar to be sure and a bit of a mind fuck. At the very least, watching The Skin I Live in should inspire some interesting convo for days afterwards.
Wines of Croatia: I attend a Wines of Croatia tasting a few weeks back at Delfina restaurant (where I’m returning this coming week for a honey tasting) in Bermondsey. Among the 34 producers ant the 180 wines they brought to the show (obviously I didn’t try them all), natural wine Piquentum Terre 9 is most remembered for its rich, juicy complexity.
Berry Bros. & Rudd Anteprima Italy Tasting 2011: Attended this too. Many highlights as you might suspect but one ‘winner’ of a wine for me was obvious: the honeysuckle-y and crisp Fiano, Bianco Basilicata, Carbone.
Santa Pod: But it hasn’t been all snooty wine tastings for me lately. Considerably more low brow, I had an absolute (and extremely loud!) blast at the FIA European Drag Racing Championships held at Santa Pod Raceway. Insane fun – I hope to go again next year!
A La Cruz: I mentioned my visit to Argentine steakhouse, A La Cruz, and its asador grill (the only one in the UK) briefly in a recent Londonist post, but reckon that meal warrants a few more words. The slow cooked Welsh lamb, the steak and the fabulous wines amounted to one of the nicest dining experiences and best meals I’ve had this year.
Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2011: Went to on Friday. Only problem was that I had to leave early because it was obvious I was not going to get anything else done other than drink whisky if I hung around any longer than an hour or so. Not a bad way to spend the day but a full load of work meant I had to get back to my digital grindstone! Best sips? Lagavulin‘s Distillers Edition and Bernheim wheat whiskey.

Never Too Early To Think About Turkey
Locally Sourced, October 7, 2011

The folks at Copas Farm in Berkshire, where the turkeys (all 40 some odd thousand of them) live a free range life roaming about in cherry orchards, are hoping people spend a little more time and money on their purchase of a Christmas turkey this year.

What’s in a Postcode? (CheapOair)
What’s in a Postcode?
CheapOair, October 07, 2011
Soon into conducting the research for any British vacation after booking London flights, you’ll most certainly come across the UK’s strange letter-number combinations attached to the end of many street addresses. EC1, SW7, WC2 – what do these mean? Essentially, their purpose is no different than that of US zip codes. However, the good news is that – in the case of London anyway – the postcode can inform you to a large extent about which part of London a place is located.
