This Post is Francophonik

DSC_8719

Francophonik is a cool new service to help Francophiles and music fans keep up to date with French travel and entertainment news. I’ve just discovered Francophonik but wish I had known about a few week’s ago when I booked a trip to Brittany (going next week – and, don’t worry, there’ll be plenty more about my Breton exploits coming up soon). Whether you’re into sport, art, going to gigs and concerts or you’re just keen to find out about interesting destinations in France and affordable travel options, Francophonik is definitely worth having a look at. All ya gotta do is become a fan of the official Francophonik Facebook page and then you’re set to learn about the latest French music, get free music downloads, be part of an online community and become eligible to win tickets and packages to French music gigs in the UK and festivals in France. C’est une nouvelle merveilleuse, no?

Now’s a brilliant time to check ’em out too. Francophonik’s latest competition, in conjunction with travel company Eurolines, offers freebie tix up to the Rock en Seine Festival. Only 10k from Paris, the festival runs from Friday the 26th to Sunday he 28th of August and features big acts like the Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Interpol, The Kills, The Vaccines, Lykke Li, Tinie Tempah and more.

francophonik7

For a chance to win the Rock en Seine package, simply visit the Francophonik Facebook page, “like it” and then apply for tickets by ticking a box. Easy peasy, and the prize – a trip to France combined with a festival boasting a top notch line-up – is pretty awesome. Bonne chance!

What’s for Lunch? Coco di Mama, Fleet Street (Londonist)

What’s for Lunch? Coco di Mama, Fleet Street
Londonist, July 12, 2011 at 11:30 am

DSCF1640 - Coco di Mama

Since opening a few months ago, Fleet Street eatery Coco di Mama has been offering “fresh food, Italian style” at a brisk pace to a seemingly never ending queue of hungry morning and afternoon patrons. “Home made” sauces (as in made fresh daily in their downstairs kitchen), al bronzo pasta (slowly drawn through bronze dies to create tiny ridges for sauces to cling to) and an especially efficient (yet nonetheless friendly) front of store experience have added up to a successful business model for providing City workers with a tasty opportunity to dispose of their income.

What’s the Best Lens for Street Photography? (Photography Tips)

What’s the Best Lens for Street Photography?

Goodbye 50, Hello 35

Now, much of what I’m going to say here is based upon personal preference. And with respect to any answer to a “best lens” question, there are apt to be as many different responses as there are photographers putting their own two cents in about it. As with so many aspects of photography, the real answer is that it all depends on a particular situation. Still, I know what’s worked for me when hitting the streets to shoot. So, couched qualifiers aside, what’s the best lens for street photography?

Makoko - Lagos, Nigeria

Key to understanding the dynamics of this heaving mess of a city, with its dozen or so million residents crammed on top of each other, is a trip to the shantytown canals of the lagoon village of Makoko. Land is at such a premium in and around Lagos, that what was once long ago a small fishing village is now an open sewage slum on stilts where the poorest of the poor have been pushed off the land.

Danger Lurks

DSC_0349

Having a look at some of the weirder situations that have led to a few less than brilliant folks ending up as unfortunate insurance statistics is always a bit of a lark. Whether due to their lackluster attention to details or refusal to observe the laws of physics, there are a lot of incredible ‘oops’ moments for us to bewilderedly gawk at – with many just a click away on the internet. For a laugh of the OMG/LOL variety, I recommend Googling “stupid summer accidents”. The Darwin Awards – hilariously horouring “those who improve the species … by accidentally removing themselves from it” ‘- never ceases to amaze either.

Yeah, there are some real doozies out there on the web. And it’s amazing how many of these spectacularly pathetic moments involve cars, or idiot magnifiers as an old friend of mine refers to them. I suppose we’re all due a bad day every now and again, but wow. I reminded of a quote by comedian George Carlin:

Just think how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are even stupider!

Seriously though, with summer frovilty fresh in the air (Hey America, happy Fourth of July!), it’s probably not a bad idea to review how to enjoy the warm weather without doing yourself in. You know the score: wear lots of sunscreen, drink lots of fluid but certainly don’t drink and drive, etc … The Red Cross website offers lots of great tips for summer safety. Have fun but don’t be a statistic.

Wimbledon in 3D

Check this out: SONY presents 3D tennis. Yes, for the first time ever, Wimbledon will be filmed and screened live in 3D direct to cinemas around the world.  Personally, I’m loving all this 3D cinema action these days. Avatar left me longing for return to Pandora, Pina helped me realize that 3D doesn’t have to be just something for the kids and now with this major sporting event being filmed in 3D, every forehand, smash and volley can be viewed by tennis fans as if they were right there. Says Fujio Nishida, President of Sony Europe, of watching Wimbleon in 3D: “Watching tennis in High Definition 3D is a stunning experience, bringing the speed of the action and emotions of the occasion to life; it is as close to the atmosphere and excitement of Centre Court as actually being there.”

This sounds like a great way to watch the tournament! And I reckon the folks behind the technology at SONY have served an ace. I mean, even if you’re not a tennis enthusiast, who can argue against the thought of Sharapova (or whomever player you might fancy) in 3D?

When it’s done right, I think 3D can enrich a viewers experience and add a bit of “make.believe” to any story: be it a fantasy set on some far flung planet, a documentary about a famous and influential dancer or the compelling drama of world class athletes competing against each other. Would you enjoy watching your favourite sports in this manner? Think this move to 3D is just a fad or here to stay?

Find your local 3D cinema and reserve a place to watch the tennis at www.wimbledon.com/sony.
