Londonist’s 5th Birthday Party is Friday! YAY!

Check it out. Londonist is five. That’s ancient in internet years. My time at Londonist has been a blast and (as the Londonist Food & Drink Editor) incredibly delicious!  Won’t you come out this Friday and celebrate London’s best multi-contributor blog with us?  We’ll be getting down with our bad selves at the The Water Poet pub (9-11 Folgate Street, E1) from 6.30. Woo hoo.

Chocolate Unwrapped 2009

Among our many favourites from our Chocolate Unwrapped visit were Gorvett and Stone‘s exploding milk chocolate frogs, Paul Wayne Gregory‘s passion fruit truffles (we’ve never heard “Oh My God!” uttered as quickly as when these babies hit the tongues our of choco-sampling companions), Pacari‘s chocolate covered banana bites and Auberge du Chocolat‘s whisky truffle, wasabi and sesame truffle and goat’s milk caramel truffle. And we were more than pleased to see our old sweeties Paul A Young and Sweet Things (third place winner of our Cupcake Throwdown) on hand for the occasion.

Review: The Restaurant at St Paul’s Cathedral (Londonist)

Review: The Restaurant at St Paul’s Cathedral
Londonist, October 10, 2009 12:31 PM

The Restaurant at St Paul's Cathedral

Open now for a couple of months, the Restaurant at St Paul’s Cathedral brings fine British dining in a tasteful setting to the crypt of one of the world’s most iconic churches. Our recent experience there was (not withstanding a foible or two) truly divine, and this review counts the blessings of such a lovely restaurant gracing our city.

L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele (Qype does London)

L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele
Qype does London, October 9th 2009

L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele

Da Michele is one of those if-you-only-have-time-for-one-meal-make-it-here sorts of places. It’s a bit of a tourist destination and queues are to be expected (especially at lunch on a Saturday). Still, the austerity of the space (think St John, Napoli-style), the easy menu (two pizzas, La Margherita and La Marinana), and an equally short list of drinks (beer, Coke, Fanta or mineral water), super cheap prices (get stuffed on a massive Margherita with doppia mozzarella for €5) all combine for the perfect Neapolitan dining experience.

Food Secret

Newbie Soho eatery, Food Secret, invited Londonist along to a lunchtime press event yesterday allowing us to have a go at their “bold new concept in fast food.” After sampling some nibbles as well as a massive “tailor made” salad, we walked away pleased enough with our experience but wondering if the place had the right ingredients for the long run.

Wine of the Month: Berry Bros & Rudd’s Own Selection Australian Shiraz, Elderton, Barossa Valley

Wine of the Month: Berry Bros & Rudd’s Own Selection Australian Shiraz, Elderton, Barossa Valley

Wow. September’s nearly gone. Has it been a whole month since my last Wine of the Month post? I reckon it has. Well, this month’s pick, Berry’s Australian Shiraz was definitely worth the wait. It’s a big ole dark and juicy wine, just crying out for a giant slab of accompanying meat or maybe a nice cigar. Alas, I have neither. Still with its sweet plummy, spicy tones, it stands well on its own and is more than doing the trick as I finish up a bit of work and watch bad American crimes shows on Channel 5. The folks at Berry Bros & Rudd reckon this is a good wine for BBQs. I’d like to add that it’s nice for a quiet night in as well … and at £8.30 per single bottle or £7.45 as part of a case (with free delivery until the 30th of this month – yeah, I know that’s really soon), it can be a fairly inexpensive night as well.

For product details and more, visit Berry Bros & Rudd online at www.bbr.com or stop by their shop at 3 St James’s Street, SW1A 1EG.

Steak Tartare

Located on tony St James’s Street, Brasserie St Jacques offers an upscale but (smart) casual Parisian dining experience not so easily happened upon in London. Among the many reasons to visit this charismatic restaurant is its exception steak tartare – among the best we’ve tasted on either side of the Channel.

Spanish Lunch Tasting Menu Review: Expressions Menu at Iberica

"Expressions" Menu at Iberica

Spanish restaurant and cultural centre, Iberica (195 Great Portland Street, W1W 5PS), has recently launched a new mini “desgustacion” menu available Monday through Saturday from noon to 3pm. Served only at the bar (and a long, lovely bar at that), the “Expressions” menu is an attractive arrangement of hot and cold (and deliciously innovative) tapas served with a crisp cold glass of Tio Pepe.
