Lastminute.com’s Top 10 London Blogs (Tooting My Own Horn)

Just this morning in a cloud of hazy Monday doubt, I pondered for a moment if anybody even gave a damn about my London Daily Photo series, something I’ve been posting in one form or another since 2006. Well, I guess the folks running the lastminute.com blog reckoned it was worth a look-see now and again. They listed it today as their reason for placing my blog in their top 10 london blogs: our pick of the best.  There are a lot of excellent blogs about this town floating around in the blogosphere. Off the top of my head, I can think of several I consider well worth regular perusing (see my sidebar for links).  Needless to say, I’m chuffed and incredibly honoured.

Another super-chunky-awesome thing about this top 10 list is the inclusion of Londonist. As Food & Drink Editor for everybody’s favourite multi-contributor blog about the greatest city in the world, I’m stoked for our site as well. Double chuff for me! Thanks Lastminute.com!

The rest of the list offers a brilliant cross section of the best of London’s online community.  Here’s the list of lastminute.com’s top 10 London blogs:

Wine of the Month: Berry Bros & Rudd’s 2007 Chateau Ricardelle, Alencades, Vin de Pays d’Oc

DSC_8372

Last week, I settled in for a quiet Friday night at home with a bowl of pasta with sugo al finocchio selvatico (fennel sauce … from Carluccio’s), a DVD and a couple of glasses of 2007 Alencades and found the combo to add up to a most appealing way to spend an evening. Alencades certainly held its own with the meal and was just as enjoyable on its own.

With a pleasant aroma suggesting clove, vanilla, berries and cinnamon, this month’s selection is a good one to keep in mind for quiet nights in. It’s agreeable enough in flavour that bringing a bottle of it over to a friend’s for dinner should have a positive effect as well. And at £7.50 a bottle, this full bodied blend of Carignan, Merlot and Marselan is a bargain too.

For product details and more, visit Berry Bros & Rudd online at www.bbr.com or stop by their shop at 3 St James’s Street, SW1A 1EG.

I’m more than pleased to announce this upcoming free Qype event at one of my favourite Japanese restaurants, Tsuru. Starting at 6.30pm on Monday the 2nd of November, our hosts at this casual and contemporary eatery will take me and nine other lucky Qypers on a four sake cocktail tour …

the parlour entrance

Here’s another bonus for Canary Wharfers: a halfway decent place to grab a bite to eat or to mingle over some drinks. Brought to you by the folks behind the Refinery in Southwark (of which we broadly approve), The Parlour is a stylish addition to the otherwise meh scene of the Wharf.

London Blend: Comptoir Gascon (Londonist)

London Blend: Comptoir Gascon
Londonist, October 26, 2009 9:31 AM

Comptoir Gascon is probably more famed for its ultra-lux lunch menu and provisions. But the home of the £14 “Signature” duck burger (which – with pan fried foie gras – makes a bacon double cheeseburger seem like diet food for paupers), provides the right setting for a delicious, and reasonably priced, cup of coffee. And the pastries? Ooh la la!

Spiced watermelon salad: cubes of watermelon with chili, peanuts, spring onion and hoysin sauce. That’s just the sort of cutting edge cuisine featured on the menu at modern Malaysian restaurant, Suka. This peculiarly provocative melon mix is also the hallmark of Suka’s range of £15 bento boxes.

It’s that time of year again: Art Fair time! “This year’s Frieze Art Fair was bigger and bolder than in year’s past. Three hours of press pass previewing still wasn’t enough to take it all in,” reports Chris Osburn from London.

However wiped out all that ogling at art made us, we were still able to pick out a few highlights worth recommending. Represented by The Third Line (Dubai and Doha), Farhad Moshiri gigantic and kitsch works of duckies, kitties and more ensured the fair couldn’t be taken too seriously while “Piggyback Ride” by Lisa Yuskavage (Greengrassi, London) haunted us (still does) with its evocative imagery. Hauser & Wirth’s selection of extraordinary pieces (Paul McCarthy, Louise Bourgeois, Ida Applebroog and more) attracted plenty of gawkers and prospective buyers.
