Donna Margherita: the Best Pizza Outside of Italy?

Donna Margherita

When a press release about Lavender Hill’s Donna Margherita restaurant having the “best pizza outside of Italy” landed in our inbox, we scoffed at it but made a note to check it out next time we were down Clapham Junction way. Well, we’re back from sampling a bit of everything that Ms Margherita had to offer us, and we’re happy to recommend that you do the same!

Londonist got thoroughly stuffed last Friday at
Island Restaurant & Bar while sampling its new gourmet a la carte breakfast menu. Located directly above Lancaster Gate Tube station on the corner of the Royal Lancaster Hotel (where we’ve dined well before) with Hyde Park in view just across the street, Island offers a comfortable and well situated venue for …

(P)review: Past Future Perfect – Contemporary Russian Art at Calvert 22
Londonist, May 12, 2009 3:42 PM

PAST FUTURE PERFECT - Russian Contemporary Art

Past Future Perfect, Calvert 22’s inaugural show, brings together works by five leading Russian artists: Alexander Brodsky, Pavel Pepperstein, Haim Sokol, Leonid Tishkov, and Stanislav Volyaslovsky. Although their styles and chosen media vary, these five artists seem to draw inspiration from a common desire to excavate the past while plunging head first into fantastic and refreshingly improbable futures. The exhibition represents the works of individuals, sometimes paying homage to Russian collective past … other times hacking it (along with the present day) to bits.

 Albert Memorial

At the southern entrance of Kensington Gardens (and not far at all from Hyde Park), this ornate and stately Gothic revival memorial adds a touch of grandeur to Kensington and is well worth a visit in its own right.

Big Red’s Tasting Session (Qype does London)

Big Red’s Tasting Session

Tasting Sessions - Big Reds

Out of all them delicious red wines, the one that got my taste buds roused and crying “giddy up go!” was the Grand Cru 2005 from Château Capet-Guillier – as full of body as a bucking steer and as hearty as a T-bone served on a porcelain plate by a pretty lady wearing flowery perfume. Guns a-blazing that was a good wine! The company was good too:  lots of city folk spinning yarn about all sorts of interesting topics and comparing notes on the wines we were sampling.

Review: The Hot House Maiden Melee (Londonist)

Review: The Hot House Maiden Melee
Londonist, May 6, 2009 5:10 PM

… the
Hot House Maiden Melee with its 1930s style of cheeky burlesque decadence and mandatory dress code (1930s black tie, tuxedos and furs) set at No 5 Cavendish Square (all three converted Georgian townhouse floors of it) was the bee’s knees! Indeed, Londonist was most impressed by the inspired performance of the 21st century’s answer to the Andrews Sisters, the Puppini Sisters. There was one particular stripper that kinda got under our skins too – Vavavoom!

Loos American Bar – Vienna, Austria

Vienna

It’s good to have well travelled architects as friends. They know the best places and spaces that cities have to offer – and when my good buddy (and well travelled architect) Michael Murphy heard that me and the missus were heading to Vienna, he kindly made us a “Must Must Must Go” list which featured the Loos Bar at the top and ended with this imperative: If you can only go to one place on this list, then DO NOT SKIP Loos American Bar!

Moti Mahal Bollywood Dinner & Dance

Here’s a fun idea. Take a 45 minute Bollywood dance class before tucking into a delicious two-course Indian meal. 6.30pm every Tuesday, the downstairs dining area of chic Indian restaurant Moti Mahal (near Covent Garden at 45 Great Queen Street, WC2B 5AA) is transformed into a Bollywood dance studio. Lead by Jassie Kalsi (of
Bollywood Grooves), the class offers …

Stumbling upon Shepherd Market

This tiny 18th century piazza is well know for its pubs (Ye Grapes is  definitely a local favourite), restaurants (from upscale French and Lebanese to what may be the world’s only Polish-Mexican bistro) and selective handful of boutiques, galleries and quaint shops. Women Need to Drink More Beer (Londonist)

Women Need to Drink More Beer
Londonist, April 30, 2009 6:35 PM

Alright ladies! Y’all know you need to drink more beer. It’s good for ya. Or at least, that’s what the folks behind the BitterSweet Partnership wanted us to tell you. The BitterSweet Partnership (full disclosure: it’s a biz set-up by Molson Coors Brewing Company) works to examine and address the relationship between beer and women … and “to make beer a stylish drink for women.” Anyway, last night they invited us along to a beer cocktail tasting and beer/food pairing event at the Red Consultancy’s offices near Piccadilly Circus. Nice one. And yeah, we reckon beer can be as classy as a glass of champers.

Dim Sum and Then Some at Royal China, Baker Street (Londonist)

Dim Sum and Then Some at Royal China, Baker Street
Londonist, April 30, 2009 10:06 AM

Royal China Dim Sum

One of the great things about dim sum is the noncommittal attitude the diner is allowed toward the food. Take a bite of something you didn’t care for all that much? Just move on to the next tasty morsel. Luckily, we very deeply cared for everything that Royal China had to offer us. In particular, the sesame paper prawn roll and glutinous rice steamed in lotus leaf elicited strong feelings of satisfaction. We sincerely appreciated the gratuitous tastiness of Royal China’s deep fried prawn dumpling in salad sauce as well.

You know you’ve been in London too long when the kind act of some random stranger approaching you for a friendly conversation gets all your hackles up and your pants in a knot.
