Adam Rawson Launches Bite Me Burger Co

P1070646

Chef Adam Rawson has launched Bite Me Burger Co, a mini-burger only eatery on Kingsway just a short stroll from Holborn Station.

Despite their diminutive description, Bite Me’s mini-burgers are far from tiny, certainly more than a bite (or three), chunkier than a slider, and definitely big on flavour. Continue reading

Vintage and Farmhouse Ales from Central Italy’s Birra del Borgo and Goose Island of Chicago were showcased and paired with dishes designed by TV chef and cookbook author Valentine Warner and Chef Martin Carabott of restaurant Luca at a recent one-off dinner hosted at Carousel in Marylebone.

I was happy to pull up a chair at the table for the occasion and very much enjoyed the beer and the pairings. Continue reading

IPW 2017 | DC Out

P1060211

Thanks for joining me as I shared some impressions about IPW and highlights from my visit in Washington.

Attending IPW 2017 was an incredible experience. So much of what I do as a freelance travel writer working out of my home, I don’t engage all that much with my colleagues and often feel a lot of what I do for a job is done in a vacuum. A giant IPW dose of navigating my way through the American travel industry’s premier marketplace did me a world of good and helped to shape my professional perspective to be more informed. IPW 2017 | As an Expat, Foodie and Tourist

P1060165

As an expat American living in London (for more than 13 years) it’s an odd feeling to head back to the US for work-related visits, especially when I don’t get to see my family. Travelling to the nation’s capital as part of the UK delegation to meet with travel industry reps at IPW was extra weird …

… but also a lot of fun and a unique way to experience the city as a visitor. Continue reading

IPW 2017 | As a Blogger and Journalist

IPW 2017 | One Big Welcome in DC

IMG_4400

I got a big welcome in Washington DC while attending my first IPW.

Have you been reading my series of posts about taking on the Baltimore food scene? If so thanks, but please hang on. Baltimore was merely the first half of my summer fun in the Capital Region. Following my adventures there, I enjoyed a few more fine days away from my desk right afterwards and just down the road in Washington DC.

I went to DC to attend IPW. Continue reading

#TasteBaltimore: Stay Hungry

P1060047

After my week of munching across the Baltimore food scene, I’m apt to place the city right up there among my very favourite dining destinations.

Sure, if a certain type of cuisine or particular dish is on trend, you’re bound to find it on plate in Baltimore. But base my on experience, I’d say folks there are way more focused on bringing forward flavour and promoting provenance (especially as it applies to local food and drink) than simply going along with foodie fashion for the sake of it.

From sitting at a picnic table and cracking crab shells open with a hammer to five star hotel finery with big name chef’s presenting novel nosh – I got a great taste of the town – and a good sense of the breadth of dining options – but left knowing there was so much more quality stuff.

Baltimore, I’m craving for more! Continue reading

#TasteBaltimore: Miss Shirley’s

P1050989

Open for breakfast, lunch and brunch all week long, Miss Shirley’s is a Baltimore institution providing full-on downhome eats (of epic proportion) and equally OTT hair of the dog hangover remedies all with efficient and friendly service.

I got a chance to indulge in breakfast at Miss Shirley’s Inner Harbor restaurant one fine morning during my trip. Wow. I would have loved to have tried every item on the menu and savoured every devoured scarf of the few I did. Continue reading

#TasteBaltimore: La Cuchara

P1060100

Sprawled across a repurposed warehouse near the hipster haunt of Hampden is La Cuchara. Taking inspiration from Basque cuisine and serving mostly small plates many of which are prepared in a wood-fired oven in an open view kitchen, the restaurant melds rustic charm with urban cool.

For an upscale American interpretation of Modern European dining, La Cuchara presents a taste of Baltimore that’s undeniably appealing. Continue reading

Come and Get Samoa (City AM)

Samoa

Samoa has one of the South Pacific’s most beautiful and varied coastlines, complemented by a lush mountainous interior.

An ideal island getaway, visitors here can pick and choose between paddling round kiddie pool lagoons of vast breadth but knee-high depth, to catching the spray off gargantuan waves crashing into craggy sea cliffs. Or both, because more often than not such lazy lagoons and hard-pounded precipices are just a few minutes drive apart, and surrounded on all sides by waterfalls, swimming holes, cave pools, white sand beaches and rainforest trails.

By all means, I heartily recommend visiting Samoa for the good times and lovely sights, but also for the back to basics joy of being there. Everything slowed to a soothing lull when I whiled away the better part of two weeks. Except for my pulse, that is, which quickened more than usual during my sometimes adventurous and always picturesque tour.

#TasteBaltimore: R. House

P1060067

My ‘taste tour’ of Baltimore continues with a visit to R. House, a giant garage that’s been repurposed into a food hall and launch pad for aspiring local chefs keen to make a mark on the city’s culinary scene.

Located in the up-and-coming downtown neighbourhood of Remington, R.House is a couple of years old and features 10 chef driven walk-up counter restaurants with seating for 350 people and a big bar in the middle of it all. Set in a disused body shop, there’s plenty of light and access to outside a la large rollup shutters. On the sunny afternoon of my visit, it was as comfy a place to plop down for lunch as anywhere I could imagine. Continue reading

#TasteBaltimore: Wit & Wisdom

P1050977

Dinner at Chef Michael Mina’s Inner Harbor outpost, Wit & Wisdom at the Four Seasons, was a highlight of my visit to Baltimore.

With its “progressive twist on traditional tavern food and Eastern seaboard classics,” the restaurant’s menu captivates as much as it comforts. Beyond what’s doing in the kitchen, Wit & Wisdom’s waterfront views from its al fresco bar or inside its plush and expansive dining room are bolstered by friendly and fast service. Continue reading
