NOLASteven Guzzardi / Flickr

Here’s a deliciously historical look at six of the finest and oldest restaurants in one of the world’s greatest cities for eating out: New Orleans. With Mardi Gras just around the corner, it’s best you make your reservations ASAP or get ready to line up if you want a bite of the action.

Please note this list is only about the city’s oldest sit-down restaurants. To be sure there are loads more bars, cafes, bakeries and shops with just as many decades behind them and, of course, all sorts of other amazing places to eat and drink around town.

Dabba Mania Lunch Menu at Talli Joe

P1030778

Modern Indian restaurant, Talli Joe, has been near the top of my list of hot spots to visit since it opened about a year ago. My tight schedule and the restaurant’s popularity (book ahead for weekend evenings!) made that tougher than usually for slipping in for a meal. But an invitation to preview its new Dabba Mania lunch menu presented an ideal opportunity finally for me to have a taste. And it was definitely worth the wait.

Launched yesterday (1 February), the Dabba Mania menu finds inspiration in Bombay’s dabbawallas (lunchtime deliverymen) and their affordable and fresh dabba lunchbox offerings. Continue reading

Significant Civil Rights Sites & Destinations You Need to Add to Your Bucket List (Miles Away)

Civil-Rights-Lincoln-MemorialNorbert Rehm / Shutterstock

It was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who said “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” In the fight for racial equality in America, there were many places around the country that served as significant meeting places for the movement, backdrops for stirring speeches and sermons, and battlegrounds for non-violent protest — many of which now memorialize and recount the struggle. These are quintessential spots that every Amercian should try to visit at least once in their lifetime.

Listed below are 15 historic sites in Washington D.C. and across the South, representing a few of the many important markers the Civil Rights Movement met along the way to justice.

P1030729

It’s a burger. It’s a bagel. Oh my God, it’s a burger on a bagel. The London Bagel Co has launched a menu of bagel burgers ranging from rather healthy to extra indulgent.

Appropriately enough, I had The London Bagel Co’s signature “Fat Bastard” burger at a recent tasting event. A Beigel Bake bagel filled with 6oz of British grain-fed beef, homemade salt beef, fried egg, American cheese and salad, that burger had me and my belly set for the next several hours. I tasted really yummy too. Continue reading

It’s probably one of the most terrifying scenarios that any travel lover can imagine. A lost or stolen passport can really put a crimp your travel style. But it doesn’t have to ruin your trip. As long as you take the right precautions and know what to do should such an unfortunate event occur, dealing with a lost passport might end up being little more than a minor hiccup in your itinerary.

Beyond the Reef | #TCTalofa

P1030015

Talofa! Thanks for joining me in remembering the amazing time I had in Samoa.

What I didn’t get around to describing in my previous post about my trip was the simple back-to-basics joy of being in Samoa. Everything slowed down to a soothing lull (except for my pulse, which quickened more than usual when jumping off a waterfall, coming upon a stunning vista or encountering a vibrant fish while snorkeling). It’s a laidback and easygoing place, but one where you can go on real adventures. Continue reading

Savai’i | #TCTalofa

P1020794

Midway during my week in Samoa I spent two full-on days of fun in the sun on the island of Savai’i.

Though far bigger that Upolu, Savai’i is largely unpopulated. It’s mostly wild too with amazing landscape, awesome coastline, and lots and lots of beauty spots for playing in the water. Continue reading

Exploring Upolu | #TCTalofa

P1030017

My Samoan adventure continued as I headed out to explore the island of Upolu.

The nation of Samoa is comprised of the most westerly islands of the Samoan Archipelago. The easterly islands represent American Samoa, a US protectorate (which I didn’t visit on this trip). There are two main islands in Samoa (the nation): Upolu and Savai’i. Although Savai’i is considerably larger, the vast majority of the population lives on Upolu, in and near the capital, Apia. During my trip, I visited Upolu, Savai’i and the tiny island of Manono. Here’s a roundup of awesome stuff I got to see and do beyond Apia while touring Upolu. Continue reading

Around Apia | #TCTalofa

P1020510

Welcome back to Talofa Samoa, a series of posts recounting the highlights from my November 2016 visit to Samoa. First up is a summary of the fun stuff I experienced in and around Apia, the capital of Samoa.

Samoa’s only actual town, Apia is a small but bustling port with a population of around 36,000 people. It served as a great base for me to revive and acclimate myself to island life after my long haul journey from the UK. Here’s a look at the best bits from my time there. Continue reading

Hey y’all, listen up. I think I might have discovered paradise or, at least, a super close approximation of the ideal tropical island getaway. I’m talking about Samoa, where I spent a magical, wet and wild week back at the beginning of November.

Over the next few days, I’ll recount my time exploring Samoa – a small island nation in the South Pacific considered to be the geographic and cultural heart of Polynesia – with Talofa Samoa, a series of posts with tips on hotels and resorts, food and drink, activities, outings and more.
