Get a Free Side with Your Lobster Roll or Calamari Club at Fraq’s Lobster Shack

Fraq's Boston Lobster Roll

Love lobster and calamari? Ever find yourself passing through Goodge Street or around Tottenham Court Road? Like getting yummy stuff for free? Then check this out! I’ve joined forces with PocketHighStreet and Fraq’s Lobster Shack to offer tikichris readers a special discount: one free side order with any purchase of a Boston Lobster Roll or a Calamari Club Roll when you buy your roll online at pockethighstreet.com or via the handy dandy PocketHighStreet app.

Fraq’s Lobster Shack on Goodge Street is an American East Coast seafood restaurant specializing in Maine lobster and seafood rolls with all the trimmings. It’s a fun and casual setting, taking in “the best aspects from Maine lobster shacks fused with a good dose of Brooklyn cool.” Open Monday to Saturday from noon to 11pm, Fraq’s is a smart choice for a scrumptious lunch, a laidback dinner or even a few drinks in the evening (they do a mean maple syrup Old Fashioned!).

Prices are already pretty reasonable at Fraq’s (especially considering the super central location and LOBSTER!). But when you take advantage of the offer I’ve cooked up with the restaurant via the PocketHighStreet website and app, giving in to a Fraq attack is stupendously good value.

Have a look at these delicious discounts …

Lunch at The Angel, City Road/Old Street

DSC06922

A few years ago I used to live just down the road from The Angel. Back then, like so many other things hovering near Old Street Roundabout, the pub was a very different place to what it is now. Following a major sprucing up, the once scruffy old boozer has reopened as a really rather clean and cosy place to have a drink. It’s still a good pub to keep in mind for enjoying a proper pint (now with a craft beer selection), you just don’t need to worry about your shoes sticking to the floor anymore.

I paid a Sunday afternoon visit to The Angel recently – my first visit since in probably four or five years – and was surprised how light and airy it was. My memory was of an “old man bar” sort of pub. I’d define the new Angel as having a more feminine expression these days –with a touch of postindustrial chic to it and lots of “angelic” features to play up the pub’s name. Heck, I wouldn’t even hesitate to take my mom there as it now is for a Sunday lunch.

Oh and if you sit upstairs (more dining room-ish than pubby) during daylight hours, admire the natural light. Lovely.

DSC06926

What I liked about my lunch (Mom wasn’t there, but Kemey and I had an enjoyable visit) was the laidback atmosphere and opportunity to have a conversation without yelling at each other … and to have some decent pub grub in a pub that wasn’t grubby. My West Country beef burger with smoked bacon and melted Cheddar, served with burger sauce, onion rings and fries (£13, augmented with pig’s cheek for an extra £2) hit the spot, and Kemey said the same of her fish and chips (sustainably caught hake in a cider batter with pea puree, tartar sauce and “chip shop chips,” £11.50).

Beer selection impressed with a seasonal tap range and regularly rotating cask ales at this Cask Marque accredited watering hole where “regular favourites” include Doom Bar, Meantime, Brooklyn Lager.

Spiffy and pleasant and much less of a hipster wallow than anywhere else you’re apt to find in the area, The Angel is located at 73 City Road, EC1Y 1BD. Find out more at theangelcityroad.co.uk.

Get a £1 Scoop of Greedy Goat Ice Cream at Piccadilly Circus and Leather Lane Market

Greedy Goat Ice Cream - Maple & Pecan Scoop

The Greedy Goat has been wowing Borough Market shoppers for some time now with its ice cream made with British goat’s milk. Now the folks at the Goat are giving more Londoners the chance to have a taste of their frozen treats with a new concession at Piccadilly Circus and a stall at Leather Lane Market. And with a limited run offer for tikichris readers to get a scoop of any flavour for only £1, ewe would be crazy not to give this goat’s ice cream a lick!

For people who are lactose intolerant, goat’s milk ice cream is a great alternative to cow’s milk ice cream. It’s also lighter, more refreshing and healthier in a lot of other ways too. Comparing goat’s milk to cow’s milk ice cream, a lot of people would say it leaves less of a film in the mouth and is sort of like a mix of traditional ice cream and a sorbet. I think they might have a point.

Greedy Goat Ice Cream - Ice cream in freezer

I sampled a variety of Greedy Goat’s flavours the other day at the just opened Piccadilly Circus concession and was pleased with what I tried. I especially enjoyed the Maple & Pecan, the Salted Caramel and the Strawberry. I’m dying for another go though as I left craving a taste of the orange sherbet, carrot cake, and pistachio. There’s an impressive array of flavours (a visit to the original Borough Market Greedy Goat is your best bet for a look at the full range).

So yeah, I loved what I tried and was glad to have finally discovered the Greedy Goat. I was pleased to learn that this so called Greedy Goat isn’t really all that usurious after all. In fact, I got the owners to agree to offer readers of this blog a scoop of delicious ice cream for just £1 at the shop inside Piccadilly Circus Station and the newly launched stall at Leather Lane street market. All ya gotta do is say the magic word “tikichris” for a £1 scoop of ice cream.

That’s right – £1 for a (rather generous) scoop of ice cream when you mention tikichris.

The offer is only good for this coming Monday to Friday, 8 to 12 June, and only at Piccadilly Circus and Leather Lane.

Get Greedy Goat ice cream at Borough Market, inside Piccadilly Circus Station, and at Leather Lane Market (Monday to Friday). For more information go to greedygoat.co.uk.

Five Years of Bar Boulud London

DSC07044Five Years of Bar Boulud London

Now considered a mainstay of the Knightsbridge dining scene, Bar Boulud London at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park celebrated five years at the hotel last week by closing the restaurant to the public and putting on an anniversary dinner hosted by Chef Daniel Boulud for “special customers and guests, and a few select media.” What a pleasure it was to be included among the select few invited to attend.

Chef Daniel Boulud proved a gracious host – and a hilarious one too! If you ever get the chance to ask him for picnic advice, do. You won’t be disappointed with his practical tips presumably learned from experience dining in the field with a resident bull showing up as a unexpected guest.

His six-course tasting menu accompanied with wines served by the glass from a selection of three large format wine bottles was equally a delight to experience:

• Vichyssoise (chilled potato and leek soup with UK smoked sturgeon and caviar;
• Saint-Jacques (scallops, puff pastry, ceps, and parsley butter);
• Flétan (halibut, potted shrimp crust and wild asparagus);
• Selle D’agneau en Rognonnade (stuffed lamb saddle with peas a la Francaise and new potatoes);
• Fromage (Montgomery’s Cheddar and Saint-Marcellin);
• Omelette Norvegienne (Baked Alaska with raspberry, pistachio, and vanilla);
• Petits Fours.

DSC07050

I loved every bite, especially the halibut and the Baked Alaska, which running from the bar nearly to the entrance was without doubt this biggest Baked Alaska I’d very laid eyes on.Wines (Chablis Premier Cru Vaillons; Domaine Montcalme; and Le Soula Rouge) paired well with the dishes and, poured at the table from Jereboam bottles, added a touch of theatre to the service.

Also in town for the occasion was celebrated Parisian charcutier, Gilles Verot, whose amazing pre-dinner spread of charcuterie made it hard to save room for the actual meal – much (if not all) of which is available regularly at Bar Boulud and worth a visit there alone.

Bar Boulud London is located at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, 66 Knightsbridge, SW1X 7LA. Find out more at barboulud.com.

Brunch … Busaba Style?

Fisherman's spiced rice - Busaba Eathai Brunch

Busaba Eathai: it’s one of those go-to restaurants in London that everybody seems to like and a lot of people absolutely love. Now the dozen-strong group of popular Thai eateries aims to broaden its appeal even further with a new brunch menu.

At the moment, brunch is available only at the Busaba Kingston Riverside and the recently opened Shoreditch outlet between 10am and 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

I paid a visit to the Shoreditch location for a taste of the menu a couple of Sundays back where I enjoyed tucking into a mound of fisherman’s spiced rice, a kedgeree style dish of seasoned jasmine rice topped with wok-fried smoked mackerel and a soft boiled egg (£7.90), accompanied by a refreshing “Koh Samui” juice (coconut, carrot and orange, £3.30).

The brunch menu features a range of other hearty breakfast dishes like baked eggs with Asian mushrooms, chilli soy scrambled eggs, coconut porridge and “Thai hash” alongside all the regular menu items that Busaba fans have come to crave. Don’t worry – you can still get that obligatory order of calamari with ginger and green peppercorns!

There are also options such as a £25 brunch and unlimited Prosecco special (one light bite and one brunch plate with nonstop Prosecco served for two hours); the “official Busaba hangovercure (a khai luak soft boiled egg with soy and Thai spices, £9.50); and a range of cocktails including a fiercely flavoursome Busaba Bloody Mary (Kaffir lime infused vodka, Thai basil, pickled green chilli sauce topped with pickled daikon and red peppercorns, £8).

I found the brunch menu to be a yummy addition to the Busaba offering and great excuse for visiting the restaurant even earlier in the day that I might otherwise have considered. If you’re able to make it to the Kingston Riverside or Shoreditch locations on the weekend, go for it – and if you can pester the other restaurants in the group to roll out the brunch as well, by all means do!

Busaba Eathai Shoreditch is located at 36 Bethnal Green Road, E1 6HT. Find out more it, the new brunch menu and more at busaba.com.

Chimborazo Day – It’s the Highpoint of the Year! (OneTravel)

Chimborazo

Part of the Ecuadorian Andes, Mount Chimborazo is an inactive volcano completely covered by glaciers at its peak. It is the highest mountain in Ecuador and in the Andes north of Peru and is higher than any summit north of it across the Americas.

And (here’s where the facts getting really cool and kind of quirky) depending on how you measure such things, Chimborazo comes out at the top of the list as the highest point on the planet.

Maze Grill, Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea

Maze Grill Royal Hospital Road

Another week, another chance to visit another Maze Grill in Chelsea. Or so that’s how things have shaped up here on this blog with Leila Duke’s review last week of Maze Grill Park Walk and now my own write up of another recently opened MG in Chelsea – this one on Royal Hospital Road.

Leila can be a tough critic. So after reading her resounding thumbs-up review of the Park Walk MG, I was keen to respond with a “yes please!” when asked if I might like to swing by the other recently opened Chelsea location to try the menu.

The restaurants (there’s another – the original Maze Grill – in Mayfair … and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of more opening soon) are part of the Gordon Ramsay Group and offer upscale comfort with a low-key vibe for when you want to go but can’t be too fussed about it. I loved the concept and enjoyed most of what I sampled during my visit to the Royal Road outlet … and pined that there’s not an MG nearer my East End home.

Highlights included the scrummy and nicely priced (for Chelsea anyway) Buffalo chicken fillets small plate (£4); USDA Prime sirloin (£3.40/oz); Wagyu triple seared fillet (£14.50/oz); and a good selection of sushi and sashimi; and yummy sides along the lines of massive onions rings (£5) and mac & cheese (£5). Steaks were amped up with especially savoury bone marrow and shallot sauce (£2). I’d go back (and hope to soon) for a chance to chow down on the short rib burger (with bacon, cheese, onion and pickle, £14). Desserts such as Eton mess (£6) and monkey bread (with pecans and vanilla ice cream, £12 to share) were a fun treat – as were the selection of wines I sampled. I especially appreciated a glass of Kung Fu Girl Reisling from Charles Smith Wines (Columbia Valley, Washington).

As Leila so succinctly put it, Maze Grill is “somewhere you will want to go more than once in awhile.” That’s certainly how I’m feeling now I’m among the initiated.

Maze Grill Royal Hospital Road is located at 79 Royal Hospital Road, SW3 4HN. Find out more about it and the other Maze Grill outlets at mazegrill.co.uk.

Much To Do About Table 9: 108 Brasserie’s Stunning New Chef’s Table

Chef Russell Ford

Maddie Salters shares that “certain feeling” from her recent dining experience at 108 Brasserie’s Table 9.

Like a flash of forethought, there’s a certain feeling one gets right before sitting down to an incredible meal. I don’t just mean the anticipation of well-crafted dishes and apt wine pairings, but of being conscious that your total experience is being cared for. That you are warmly welcomed into a space where delicious bites and sips are shared in good company, with engaging wait staff to guide you through your culinary journey, and a generous atmosphere that puts you right at home in your surroundings. That sums up my experience at 108 Brasserie’s Table 9.

108 Brasserie, the recently refurbished dining experience in the heart of Marylebone, is known for its lush local ingredients and hearty menu staples, as well as its well-stocked bar and wine cellar. Less known, perhaps, is the introduction of private dining to its sphere of talents: the incomparable Table 9. Table 9, the brasserie’s own answer to a chef’s table, sits in the center of its uptempo dining room. Though the table comes with all the excitement of being in the thick of it, it’s still very much a world all its own, catered to by an exceptional set of waiters and providing an intimate space for up to eight diners.

What impressed me about 108 Brasserie was the attention to detail from start to finish. Upon entering, my coat was whisked away and friendly hosts led me to a seat in the chic outer bar. Separate from the main restaurant, the bar was a wonderful spot to cool down after traversing the Central Line at rush hour, and to prep for a wonderful, thoroughly British-inspired dinner by sipping on a glass of English sparkling wine. I was asked if I’d like a drink right away: that’s the kind of service you can really toast.

Table 9 itself was a top-to-bottom experience. Where 108 Brasserie’s bar had almost a midtown-NYC vibe to it, ultra modern and contemporary, filled with cosmos in martini glasses clinking, the dining room had a decidedly refined and traditional air to it. Designed by Alexander Waterworth, oak reliefs and burnt orange mohair chairs were reflected in every richly golden mirror and in each of my four silver forks. (You know a meal has been well-planned when there’s a utensil ready for every course.)

The menu itself was an ode to farm freshness. There’s a curious disconnect in fine dining, that ‘farm fresh’ isn’t always found the High Streets. Well, Executive Chef Russell Ford proved that it should be. The custom menu, inspired by English dishes and English ingredients, was tailored especially for our party. It included watercress soup with black headed gull’s egg and haddock (a seaside twist to an old favourite,) and cornish lamb cooked three ways with peas, broad beans, and wild garlic. Each ingredient was included with purpose, and highlighted by everything else on the plate. Each bite had impact, and no two bites were exactly the same.

I was especially awed by the seared tuna, which had heirloom tomato and avocado marbled into its soft surface, served chilled, as well as the dessert of Yorkshire rhubarb and custard doughnuts and sorbet: surprisingly light, which was appreciated after four courses.

The menus for Table 9 are all bespoke– pricing varies depending on courses, beverages, and number of guests. On my menu for the evening, each course came a wine pairing, chosen by the in-house sommelier. The dessert course was paired with a cheerful and festive Muscat, while the final cheese and chutney course was complimented by a Balvenie Doubelwood, aged ten years. A spot of tea later, and I was ready to all but roll home, very satisfied.

In all, 108 Brasserie is a grand marriage of people and food. The personality of its staff are found in the plating and wine choices, in the helpful recommendations and quick follow-ups. The place has undeniable heart, and you are welcomed into the fold from your first step in. That my water glass never ran empty, and that the vegetarian in our party also delighted at her menu options speaks to the restaurant’s flexibility and attentiveness.

Even the bread was delicious – my guest asked for a second helping.

108 Brassiere is located at 108 Marylebone Lane, W1U 2QE. For more details on Table 9, to view different menus available or to book, contact Julia_lindquist@doylecollection.com or go to 108brasserie.com.

Good Stuff #41

Good Stuff (Great Cocktails) at Number 90, Hackney Wick

Good stuff and lots of it! Here’s the (long overdue) lowdown on some fine things to see, sip or savour – all of which I’ve recently come across and thought were worth sharing with you. Enjoy.

Number 90

It seems like ages ago, but the fun time had at the first anniversary party back in March at Number 90 (90 Wallis Road, Hackney Wick) is still a fresh fond memory. It’s an ace venue for convivial canal-side gathering with yummy food and drink. Cocktails are especially delish!

Limited Edition Hedonism Quindecimus from Compass Box Whisky

Blended and bottled to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Compass Box, I loved sipping a sample of this complex, richly sweet blended grain whisky with tropical notes.

Irish Brown-Bread Crackers from Sheridans Cheesemongers

I had a bite … and then another … and another of these simple but tasty handmade crackers from family food producers Sheridans. Look for them at Marks & Spencer, as part of a new range of branded artisan foods from across the British Isles.

Japanese Super Foods from Yutaka

Japanese food brand, Yutaka, as launched a number of awesome new products over the past few months. I can’t recommend enough the low calorie and dietary fibre rich shirataki glass noodles made from the konjac plant (RRP £1.50 for 170g, online and at Whole Foods) and the brown jelly-like Konnyaku tofu also made from konjac (RRP £1.50 for 220g online and at Whole Foods).

The Nutty Way to Have Coffee in Lecce, Italy (espressoCrazy)

Caffee in ghiaccio con latte di mandorla

One of the perks of getting to travel as much as I do is the opportunity to have a peek at (and of course a taste of) local coffee customs. Recently, I was found myself in the Southern Italian city of Lecce where the concept of the ideal cup of joe was especially delicious – and proved a perfect match for the warm and sunny weather I enjoyed while there.

At any café or coffee bar worth its grounds in or around the town, the go-to drink is caffe in. This espresso-based treat was so refreshing and flavourful. I had it a number of times and came to crave it.

Art for a Cause: Artists Team Up with Rolls-Royce to Battle Breast Cancer

Charming Baker One in Eight
Charming Baker, One in Eight

Maddie Salters rolls up to the Rolls-Royce Showroom at Berkeley Square to view works presented for the Breast Cancer Care Art Auction.

At the Rolls-Royce Showroom in Berkeley Square, passion, support, and community were affectionately curated for the benefit of breast cancer patients. The Breast Cancer Care Art Auction, brought together by Breast Cancer Care and supported by Rolls-Royce, invited twelve stunning contemporary artists to create an impactful piece that would push the boundaries o modern sculpture while showing great respect and care of the theme. I was honoured to attend the preview of the auction on May 19th, and deeply touched by the philanthropic efforts of all involved.

The Breast Cancer Care Art Auction offered its artists a challenge: using a 1:18 scale replica model of a Rolls-Royce Ghost, create a thoroughly modern stand-alone sculpture. Each creator took to the task differently, with some crafting purely abstract visions of conflict, consequence, and career choices. However, each piece echoed its heavy subject matter. In RR Shades of Grey, Sam Taylor-Johnson’s use of gradient is a haunting reminder of how what we see on the outside does not always match what goes on within, a testament to the everyday strength of breast cancer patients. While Andrew Salgado’s Painter’s Palette playfully coats the Ghost in a dappling of every colour, it echoes the way one’s profession invades all aspects of their life, almost simplistically, without notice or trying: it is not a stretch to imagine how illness can do the same.

While the cohesion of the auction collection is stunning, the pieces which had the most impact were those that grasped the thematic subject matter in an undeniable way.

Maggis Hambling’s Out of the Depths, which features a wave-encrusted Ghost brandishing itself out of the sea made me stop on the floor to take it in. At the model car’s helm is the Spirit of Ecstasy, the Rolls-Royce emblem, stationed like a ship’s Figurehead, but also mid-flight like an angel, leading the model from the dark of the water and back into air, into light. The piece has a wonderful sense of motion, that rather than its stationary brothers, it is moving ahead, forward, lifting itself. The sensation of triumph against insurmountable odds is overwhelming and inspiring.

Equally striking is Charming Baker’s One in Eight. One in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK. This staggering statistic is represented by the Ghost being suspended in a block of clear resin, where despite its power, grace, and assemblage, two of the sixteen holes drilled through the resin move right through it. It depicts the very real force that this illness is, and how randomly chosen are its sufferers.

Lastly, Angel Palmer’s The ghost is a beautiful visual play on words. The only piece not to use the model car, but instead to etch its features in many layers of translucent resin, creating three-dimensionally, shows a vulnerability and embraces the irony of the model’s name, Ghost. However, it also focuses on the power housed inside of the vehicle, rather than merely by its shell, challenging the implications of the word Ghost.

In all, the collection of art and artists showed a wonderful amount of futurism in their work, both abstract and aesthetic, with nature and technology in tandem, as they must be as we move forward towards a cure for breast cancer. Richard Carter, Director of Communications for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said of the collection: “This has been an exhilarating collaboration which promises to raise valuable funds for a very worthy cause.”

The pieces will be privately auctioned at the Royal Automobile Club (89 Pall Mall,  SW1Y 5HS) on 30 June. All funds will support Breast Cancer Care, the UK’s only breast cancer-specific charity, which offers support and care to patients, and training and networking to skilled nurses, with a focus on bolstering vital early detection screenings.

Works include pieces by Mark Wallinger, Richard Wentworth, Maggi Hambling, Yinka Shonibare, Gavin Turk, JJ Adams, Charming Baker, Natasha Law, Angela Palmer, Andrew Salgado, Stuart Semple and Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Happy Canary Islands Day (OneTravel)

Canary Islands

Today is Canary Islands Day, an opportunity to celebrate Spain’s archipelago of fun-in-the-sun island destinations just off the coast of southern Morocco. There are seven main islands in the Canaries – Fuerteventura, Gomera, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, Lanzarote, La Palma, and Tenerife – along with a number of islets as well. Each of the islands is distinctively different to the others – and all have their merits beckoning travelers of just about every persuasion.

Shall we have a look at each island and what makes it unique?

Barcelona’s Spa at the Top of the World (OneTravel)

Hotel Arts Barcelona

That the tallest building in Barcelona is the five-star waterfront Hotel Arts speaks volumes to this sensational city’s much-lauded reputation as the dream Mediterranean getaway. The 43-storey luxury hotel is situated at a marine between town and beach and caters capably to guests seeking both seaside chills and urban thrills. At the very top of the Arts is 43 The Spa. For rarefied pampering with a view to match, the spa’s signature 43 Sea Experience allows the body to unwind while the mind and spirit soar.

I paid a visit to the hotel about a month ago and had the pleasure of booking a session at the spa. I’m still feeling the benefits from that chance to unwind and can’t quite get over just how completely luxuriant it was. I’d love to go back and hope this thinly veiled gloat may serve as an enthusiastic recommendation to get you over there.

Something for Everyone at Maze Grill, Park Walk

Young kale and nori salad (1)

Leila Dukes takes a considered view in her delectable review of Gordon Ramsay Group’s new Maze Grill Park Walk in Chelsea.

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Michael Pollan’s suggestion for healthy, balanced eating habits has a simple, bold clarity which rings true on a deep level. We should all be eating less meat, for both health and environmental reasons.

And yet. The “mostly” in the famous phrase is a giant loophole, carte blanche to veer off course in the quest for wholesome living – once in a while. If red meat, seafood, rich sauces, dairy and other delicious non plant-based food is acceptable occasionally, it makes sense to make those times a real occasion.

Book a table at a restaurant with carefully sourced meat, handled with skill by people who are passionate about the whole process: somewhere like Maze Grill Park Walk in Chelsea.

The beauty of the menu is that there is something for everyone; it would be an excellent option for a reunion with old friends, or a family gathering of various generations. The space is cosy with a chic interior design – somehow the restaurant manages to pull off an exposed brick wall in such a swank part of town.

The restaurant specialises in rare-breed, dry-aged prime beef, a mixture of British native breeds, US prime steaks and Japanese wagyu. Some of the cuts can be seen maturing in Himalayan Salt Block ageing cabinets, which help draw the moisture out of the beef.

Taking equal billing is a “raw bar” making sushi and sashimi to order. We tried the California Roll (£9), which comes topped with a generous pile of snow crab and tempura crunch. Scallops Yuzu (£14) which was finished with frozen yuzu grated at the table caused chopsticks to clash over the last bites. Another stand-out dish was the Salmon Nashi (£10) with the silky, high grade salmon contrasting pleasantly against thin slices of crunchy, refreshing Nashi pear. The sashimi selection showed off the pure quality of the seafood at maze Grill.

Tuna devilled eggs

The small plates section of the menu comprised modish dishes like Smashed Avocados with Sweet Potato Chips (£4) and delightfully retro Tuna Devilled Eggs (£4), updated with the addition of dill and nori seaweed in the filling. The Soft Shell Crab Sliders £11) were a perfect morsel: dinky, juicy and flavourful, with a well judged amount of cocktail sauce.

In the past I have felt indifferent to Gordon Ramsay Group restaurants such as Heddon St Kitchen, which neither wowed nor disappointed. But I left Maze Grill Park Walk thoroughly impressed – there were simply no duds on the menu. Even the salads were astonishingly good – if you have taken Michael Pollan’s advice to heart, you could still enjoy a fantastic plant-based meal at this restaurant without feeling at all deprived. The Shaved Cauliflower side dish quietly stole the show: paper-thin slices tossed with creamy pureed cauliflower, parmesan and dill dressing. The contrast between the silky dressing, toothsome raw veg, crunchy toasted almonds and fragrant herbs was addictive.

Honestly I happily ignored the last bites of the giant T-Bone steaks my companions were digging into in favour of the Young Kale and Nori salad – this one was given a deep kick of savoury, salty umami with bottarga fish roe.

Between us we tried a few desserts and surprisingly, the best was the “Frozen Lime Yoghurt with Toasted Meringue” (£6) – light and refreshing after the previous hearty courses. Next time I will leave more room for the “Monkey Bread”, spiced cinnamon rolls with pecans and ice cream (£12 to share).

Whether you’re a carnivore, omnivore or vegetarian, maze Grill Park Walk is somewhere you will want to go more than once in awhile.

maze Grill is located at 11 Park Walk, SW10 0AJ. Find out more at mazegrill.co.uk.

Leila was invited to dine a guest of the restaurant, to give an honest review.

3 Supremely Sunshiny Reasons to Visit Southern Italy’s Salento (OneTravel)

Salento

Just back from a too short, but super sunny and fun-filled visit to Salento, I’m eager to rave about how wonderful this part of southern Italy is. Located in the region of Puglia, Salento is at the very bottom of the country’s so called boot heel.

For a taste of rustic Italy at its very best with plenty of rich history, beautiful beaches and warm hospitality, I can think of few destinations that yield as much “bang for your buck” as this quiet corner of the Mediterranean.

Infographic: The Evolution of the Ice Cream Van

Evolution of the Ice Cream Van

One of the tastiest sights (and sounds) of summer is the ice cream van. But did you ever wonder how this tried and true classic has evolved over the years?

In Britain, ice cream vans mean summer. They are synonymous with childhood and bygone days of bicycles and water balloon fights. Always heard before they were seen, their chimes heralded relief from the summer sun in the saccharine-sweet tunes of some song you knew well, but didn’t know where from …

Thanks to Van Monster for providing such a fun and tasty infographic to share!

Bird of Smithfield Soars into a Second Year

Bird of Smithfield Roof Terrace

A (somewhat belated) happy birthday to Bird of Smithfield and cheers for the brilliant self-hosted bday par-tay! I had a blast and loved exploring your multiple floors of foodie fun – especially hanging out at your Veuve Clicquot roof terrace taking in the views of Smithfield Market and Clerkenwell.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit I missed the takeoff two years back and that it’s taken me all this time to make it round for a peck of something yummy at Bird. Boy, have I been missing out!

Bird of Smithfield Private Dining

It’s a keen space. Yes, the terrace is lovely on a warm evening. But the private dining room is special too. I loved the mid century modern elements with a splash of quirky accouterments. Still, it was the food and drink that has me hankering for a return. Luckily enough, I’ve got a foodie friend throwing her own birthday bash soon at Bird. A repeat is fast approaching! Woo hoo. Making up for lost time!

Chef Owner Alan Bird does a whiz-bang job serving down to earth but scrumptious dishes. Nibbles such as crispy monkfish cheeks with spiced tartar sauce really do it for as. Same can be said for Cornish crab with pearl barley, parsley and brandy cream. Fancy a steak? The restaurant’s right across the street from the city’s age old meat market.

While at the shindig I slipped in on a wine pairing hosted by The Knotted Vine, new “young and dynamic London based wine importers” from just round the corner at Cow Cross Street “dedicated to working exclusively with hands on, quality driven winemakers from across the globe.” From what I’ve tasted, the fellows are importing some fine quaffs indeed.

Bird of Smithfield is located at 26 Smithfield Street, EC1A 9LB. Find out more at birdofsmithfield.com.
