Proper Pies and Great Pub Grub at Punch Tavern, Fleet Street

In addition to the great food and drink, Punch Tavern has a singular air about it and is a lovely spot to find yourself. There’s gorgeous natural light streaming in from a glass ceiling in the main bar area, a working fireplace, and original features from 1897 such as marble bar, dark oak panelling, and a series of original Punch and Judy themed paintings. Theatre Review: The Golden Dragon at the Drayton Arms, SW5

Fancy a theatrical and thought provoking Thai/Chinese/Vietnamese takeaway? The Golden Dragon is a “dark modern tale of immigration” set in the kitchen of an East Asian restaurant as well as in the homes and businesses of some of its regular patrons. Just in time for Chinese New Year … German playwright Roland Schimmelpfennig’s one act exacting contemplation of globalisation is on for a (very) short run at South Kensington’s Drayton Arms pub theatre. Upstairs Dining at The Portman Pub & Restaurant, Marylebone

The contact address may say Upper Berkeley Street, but The Portman Pub & Restaurant is very much part of the dynamic dining scene of its cross street corner – Seymour Place, home to Lockhart, Vinoteca, Sandy’s and Donostia. After my Friday night dinner, I’m pleased to report this Marylebone gastropub just a short jaunt from Marble Arch does a good job keeping up with the competition. Continue reading

Theatre Review: When Midnight Strikes, Upstairs at the Gatehouse

If you’ve ever been in a room with more than one Manhattanite, you’ll recognise the tone of this musical and the acerbic banter bounced between its characters. Indeed, I was half surprised for there not to be a sea of yellow cabs swarming the streets of Highgate as I left the Gatehouse pub humming after Friday night’s stellar performance of When Midnight Strikes. Sunday Lunch: Paradise by Way of Kensal Green

I don’t want to give away too much about the fantastic dining room of Paradise by Way of Kensal Green. Jack the Ripper’s London Today (CheapOair)

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the notorious Jack the Ripper murders in the East London area of Whitechapel. The first of the Ripper’s victims, Mary Ann Nichols, was found in the streets near London Hospitality in April of 1888. The identity of person who murdered her and four – or possibly five – other women still remains a mystery, but the case continues to horrify and fascinate as much as it did back over a century ago. London’s Chinatown Around the Edges (OneTravel)

London’s annual Chinese New Year parade will slither its way through Chinatown on Sunday the 10th of February. Obviously, going out for Chinese cuisine on that day would make a lot of sense … if you’re patient or have the luxury of planning ahead and making a reservation. However, if you find yourself burnt out on Chinese food or still wishing to enjoy the Chinatown festivities without having to endure the crowds, it’s worth noting there’s a lot more on offer in this area than dumplings and Peking duck.
