Three Food & Wine Matches Made in Heaven (31 Dover)

Three Food & Wine Matches Made in Heaven

Ever had a delicious dish accompanied by a wonderful wine – but the two of them together resulted in an utterly disastrous meal?

Incompatible food and wine pairings can be a total party pooper for the palate. But we all know how tasty things can be when an eat-and-drink combo turns out to be terrific or when we stumble upon an excellent pairing we otherwise might not have thought of.

But how do you get a pairing right?

Conventional wisdom goes a long way of course. No one’s really going to argue with having a glass of Malbec with rump steak or a wee vintage Port with an umami-rich cheese plate. Honestly, though, much of might work best for you depends in large part on your own personal preference, quality of the wine (and the food), and all sorts of other factors – some of which you might not even be aware of.

So, for your most quaff-able of considerations, here’s a trio of food and wine pairings that definitely do the trick for me. Two might not come across as terribly revolutionary but many a wine lover might find my third suggestion rather novel.

(Northern) California Dreamin’ | Berkeley

1 Chez Panisse Berkeley

Judith Schrut moves on to Berkeley for the next stop in  her tour of Northern California.

We’re heading south now, down Highway 101 to Berkeley, home of the Free Speech Movement, the top public university in the USA and my Alma Mater.

I won’t say how long ago I was a naive and idealistic undergraduate here, but I would do it again at the drop of a peace sign. Berkeley is also a great holiday destination, particularly for lovers of food, music and American counterculture. Continue reading

Staying Sober on St. Paddy’s? Here’s How to Do It & Where to Go! (Going Places)

Staying Sober on St. Paddy’s? Here’s How to Do It & Where to Go!

For some, St Patrick’s Day is synonymous with a night of heavy drinking. But should it be? The patron saint of Ireland is said to have started his life as a slave and ended it as a bishop — and legend has it he rid the island of snakes. There’s no talk of him enjoying even a drop of whiskey or heading to the pub at the end of the day for a pint. So, as fun as drinking green beer and donning a goofy, oversized hat might be, there could be other ways to commemorate his deeds and legacy.

Let’s take a look at a few alcohol-free ideas for doing up St. Patrick’s Day that won’t leave you suffering from a hangover the next day or wondering where you parked your shillelagh.

Dream Destinations for Lovers of Irish Literature

If you find inspiration for your travels in the pages of great literature you’ll love this list of cities rich in sights to see and contextual meaning for some of Ireland’s most accomplished writers. And as anyone with even limited knowledge of Irish literature should know – not all these destinations are in Ireland.

As an always-on-the-go band of essayist, poets, novelists and playwrights, Ireland’s literary heavyweights certainly traveled far and wide. Here’s a look at four European cities where they got up to their most noteworthy doings.

Where to Dine in Dublin | Index

P1100653

James Joyce said that he always wrote about Dublin, “because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal.”

And we all know the way to a city’s heart is through its stomach.

So I hope found some savoury insight or at least some sweet recommendations in my series about dining in the Irish capital. Continue reading

Where to Dine in Dublin | Piglet Wine Bar

P1110022

Another day, another ideal meal in Dublin with this one served at casual and comfy Piglet Wine Bar.

This laidback little eatery on the edge of Temple Bar was a last minute idea for dinner – but one that turned out to be brilliant. I loved the concept and the food and left wishing there was something similar in my hood back home in London. Continue reading

Where to Dine in Dublin | Fish Shop, Benburb Street

P1100988

I’m back on track with more of Dublin to devour! For this instalment of this Where to Dine series, I go back to basics with a lovely lunch at Fish Shop.

Fish Shop on Queen Street is a tasting menu oriented restaurant that seems to have taken Dublin’s food-erati by storm. Alas, it wasn’t open when I had a chance to visit, but its slightly younger sister outlet – a supremely simple chip shop and wine bar about a block away on Benburb Street – was. So I went there – and had what I reckon will go down as one the very best meals of my year. Continue reading

Where to Dine in Dublin | The Winding Stair

P1100956

Given its prominence in guide books and listicles as well as its tourist-accessible location near the Ha’penny Bridge, my instinct was to stay clear of The Winding Stair. Then I read the menu.

Where to Dine in Dublin | Oxmantown

P1100658

My first full day of dining in Dublin commenced with a quality breakfast from quaint north city centre café, Oxmantown.

I’m pleased to report this wasn’t the only amazing a.m. meal I had during my visit. Indeed, I returned home reckoning Dublin might be one of the best destinations for breakfast I’ve been to in years and with a list of other eateries I wished I’d been able to hit. But I was glad I’d made the choice to spend a little time and money at Oxmantown. Continue reading

Where to Dine in Dublin | Bunsen

P1100450

First stop on my Dublin dining tour: Bunsen for a beauteous belly buster of a burger.

I arrived in Dublin just in time for lunch, checked into my Fleet Street hotel and ambled over to Bunsen for a burger.

Before my trip I’d done some preliminary Googling for “best restaurants” in town and in the area where I was staying (Temple Bar). Bunsen kept coming up. I certainly wasn’t against having a good burger and couldn’t argue with it being just a couple of minutes away from my room. Continue reading

Where to Dine in Dublin

P1100982

Wondering where to dine in Dublin? You’re in luck! As good of a question as it might be, the answers are all the more excellent and delectable.

Some client-based work had me jetting off to Dublin about a month ago and staying there for the better part of a week. It had been roughly five or six years since my prior – and only other – time in the Irish capital. I was impressed by how much the city seemed to have changed while retaining still what had made such a distinctively fun destination for me that first time around. In particular, food was markedly more delicious than I remembered. Continue reading

Tejo Wines

P1120111

I’ve done the Douro, been all around the Alentejo and even ventured into the vinho verde vineyards of Minho. So, I suppose it’s time to further fill the gaps in my knowledge of Portuguese wine with some time in the river valley wine region of Tejo.

A recent tasting of wines from Tejo held at Taberna do Mercado (one of favourite places to eat in London) provided the perfect inspiration to get moving on a visit to this little celebrated part of Portugal producing some beautiful wines well worth seeking out. Continue reading

Eric Fischl: Presence of an Absence at Skarstedt, St James’s

P1120122

An exhibition of new paintings by American artist Eric Fischl opens at Skarstedt gallery near Green Park Station on Thursday (1 March). The show examines the artist’s central theme (and title of the show, “Presence of an Absence” via seven large canvas works that provoke the more you ponder them.

There’s a foreboding quality to the paintings, usually juxtaposed against intimate and otherwise pleasant settings filled with bright daylight with (just) enough of a ‘presence of an absence’ to allow the viewer to fill in the gaps of some sort of off kilter storylines and shadowy, fleeting moments that Fischl captures in “discovered” depictions of what he calls “transitional spaces.” Continue reading

(Northern) California Dreamin’ | Mendocino

The Wine Country in winter

Judith Schrut moves on to the next stop of her Northern California road trip: Mendocino.

It was always going to be a wrench to leave San Francisco but now that we were, it was time to pick up that rental car. Despite her go-green touchy-feely vibe, it’s difficult to get the best out of California without a motor.  Sorry, the car rental folk told us on arrival, we’re clean out of the rock bottom budget babe you paid for. Would you like this luxury SUV for the same price? No thanks, but we will take that sexy Mini Cooper convertible there in the corner instead. So off we rolled, with SF fogging over and the wind nipping at our Mini-tail, over the glorious Golden Gate and on to the wild, winsome north. Continue reading

Jerusalem is certainly an interesting place. Now that maybe stating the obvious but there’s something very contemporary happening and it’s hard to ignore.
