Win a Bundle of Fruit Bowl Goodies

Win a Bundle of Fruit Bowl Goodies

COMPETITION IS NOW OVER AND THE WINNER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. THANKS SO MUCH FOR READING TIKICHRIS. PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR LOTS MORE FUN AND FREEBIES TO COME.

Are you certain the most important people in your life are getting their recommended five a day? Here’s a tasty way to be sure.

Stats from a new survey of 1000 parents, commissioned by Fruit Bowl reveal that only 9% of children get their five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, every day.

More staggering findings include the following:

  • One in four children aged 4-12 are only getting two portions a day;
  • On average, children aged 4-12 get less than three portions of fruit and vegetables a day;
  • 11% of children aged 4-12 and under never get their five a day;
  • 45% of parents surveyed give their children two or more unhealthy snacks a day after struggling to get them to eat fruit.

These findings are supported by Mintel’s recent survey which showed that 50% of parents who buy snacks for children agree that it is hard to get children to eat healthier snacks.
The folks at Fruit Bowl want to make it easy and affordable for kids to get their five a day. I can go along with that! So I’m teaming up with Fruit Bowl for a friendly giveaway competition offering a bundle of goodies from the Fruit Bowl range while helping share the message that we all need to do a better job eating enough fruit and veg.

Save a Crust and Reduce Bread Waste in North London

Save a Crust

I’m wising up to waste and helping get the word out about the North London Waste Authority’s Save a Crust campaign. It’s a fun and yummy way to reduce waste and be a better cook!

Did you know that 24 million slices of bread are thrown away every day in the UK, contributing to the average household tossing out £800 worth of food annually?

According to research commissioned by NLWA, more than 250 million bread crusts are binned every year across London alone, with one in four people saying they overlook the end slices of loaves. Just under 13 million loaves of bread (and just over £13 million) is thrown away every year and the equivalent of one and a quarter full loaves of bread being discarded every month by households that choose not to eat the ends of their loaves. In total, 1.2 billion bread crusts binned across the nation each year – worth nearly £62 million.

This all stacks up to a very sad situation indeed! But I’m here to help spread the news about the Save a Crust campaign and offer some tasty ideas to help you reduce waste and save money.

Roadkill’s Matthew Gregson-Jones | #TCTalks 64

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_9f

I was so impressed with my visit last month to Camden Town Roadkill I went back for more – this time with my digital recorder and time set aside to interview founder Matthew Gregson-Jones.

For episode 64 of tikichris Talks, I chat with Matthew about the back-to-basics concept behind Roadkill and how sourcing quality meat direct from British farmers can result in better tasting food, less wastage and lower prices for customers.

Mandela: The Official Exhibition, 26 Leake Street, Waterloo

Mandela: The Official Exhibition, 26 Leake Street, Waterloo (raised fist)

Touring exhibition Mandela: The Official Exhibition premieres today (Friday 8 February) at 26 Leake Street next to Waterloo Station. The show invites visitors on a personal journey through the life and times of one of the world’s most recognised and admired activists and political leaders and celebrating his legacy.

I tagged along for yesterday’s press preview and left the exhibition feel invigorated but grounded. The world has changed a great deal since 11 February, 1990 when Nelson Mandela was released from being in prison for 27 years and his moral authority has been missed sorely since his death 5 December 2013 at the age of 95.

Katy Riddle discovers the intense flavours of the Isle of Islay without leaving Manhattan, thanks to The Botanist dry gin.

I’ve always been drawn to gin when craving an inventive cocktail or thirst-quenching spirit-and-mixer combo, so I jumped at the chance to learn more about The Botanist and the source of its distinctive complex taste. The first and only dry gin from the Isle of Islay, The Botanist features a unique combination of 22 hand-foraged local botanicals and offers a rare insight into the heritage and heart of this remote Scottish island.

What to Eat and Drink in Hiroshima, Japan (Great British Chefs)

P1190289

Wrapping up my time in Kobe, I hopped onto the Shinkansen (bullet train) en route to the other city on my Japanese agenda: Hiroshima. Here I divided my time between the city centre and Miyajima, a small island a few miles offshore in the midst of Hiroshima Bay.

As in Kobe, the food in Hiroshima was fantastic. And despite a tight schedule with plenty of sightseeing I managed my best to consume with craven curiosity.

Here are the culinary highlights of my few days there.

Flexing Vegan

Flexing Vegan

I’m rolling out a new series of restaurant reviews called Flexing Vegan. In it, I’m going to review eateries around London with vegan only menus, committing on them as an eater who loves meat and other animal-based foods but can no longer see the point of eating so much of it so often.

I’ve had the notion to start a vegan review series in mind for quite a while. However, I waited until February to kick it off because I didn’t want folks thinking I was hopping on this year’s especially crowded Veganuary bandwagon. Rather, I hope people will notice along with me that beyond foodie fads and fading New Year’s resolutions there’s a longterm trend toward plant-based dining and that it can be far healthier, considerably more ethical and sometimes even yummier than conventional western eating habits.

Review of Alita: Battle Angel

Alita: Battle Angel

Last night I attended the IMAX 3D world preview of Alita: Battle Angel at Cineworld Cinema – London Leicester Square. The best bits of the film were an action-packed and visually stunning rollick but a few too many less than exciting lulls lingered in between.

Nonetheless, it offers enough fun for me to recommend going to see this sci fi flick when it’s released in the UK cinemas next week.

Indian Accent, Albemarle Street, Mayfair

Indian Accent, Albemarle Street, Mayfair

Supremely scrumptious and indulgently flavoured but held back from being cloyingly rich and overdone, Chef Manish Mehrotra’s menu at Indian Accent in Mayfair is a delight for gourmands with gourmet sensibility.

With award-winning restaurants in New Delhi and New York as well as the year-old outpost here in London, Mehrotra’s culinary aim is to explore “progressive ideas in Indian cuisine while maintaining traditional integrity” to present dishes that taste distinctively Indian in character but reflect an openness toward global techniques and influences.

Unsung Cities | Köln, Germany

Unsung Cities | Köln, Germany

My ode to the Unsung Cities of the world continues with a short and sweet stroll through one of Germany’s prettiest metropoles.

For the third profile in the series and the first of 2019, I’m crushing on the sweet scented city of Köln (which from here on out I’ll address with the anglicised spelling, Cologne).

Perhaps not as unsung as the first two cities I profiled (Pittsburgh and Cleveland), but as is the case with a number of German cities (that aren’t Berlin or Munich), Cologne is often overlooked and under appreciated by international travellers.

Why Has Veganism Gotten So Popular?

Why Has Veganism Gotten So Popular?

It wasn’t that long ago that “vegan” barely showed up in conversation, let alone the headlines. But now, it seems to be in the news to some degree every week, whether it’s a brand-new product or someone getting unusually offended by the ‘audacity’ of edible plant options being offered anywhere, despite having presumably eaten a salad before. But generally, the idea of veganism has had a positive response of late, with a record number of Brits estimated for this year’s Veganuary.

The UK is particular is embracing the vegan trend. One study from The Vegan Society revealed that: Continue reading

Episode 61 of tikichris Talks is set on the shore of the Medway River at the Copper Rivet Distillery in Chatham, Kent.

During my visit, I taste my way through the Copper Rivet core range of spirits (Vela Vodka, Dockyard Gin, Son of a Gun English Grain Spirit) as well as a few limited run products and even a couple of sneaky samples of what is to be Masthouse Whisky (to launched in 2020).

Between sips I speak with Copper Rivet cofounder Stephen Russell and the distillery’s Head Distiller Abhi Banik about what makes Copper Rivet drinks truly unique and decidedly Kentish in character.

In Pursuit of Office Happiness with Staples and Professor Sir Cary Cooper

In Pursuit of Office Happiness with Staples and Professor Sir Cary Cooper

Yesterday (Monday 21 January) was so called Blue Monday, purportedly the most depressing day of the year. How blue were you and to what extent did your workplace affect your mood?

My Blue Monday was a mild one. It was fairly productive, even fun. One of the best things about it was dropping by the Pop-Up Happiness Experience put on by office supplies retailer Staples to launch its In Pursuit of Office Happiness report. The launch included a presentation by Professor Sir Cary Cooper of Manchester Business School, who spoke to a small group of media folk about happiness in the workplace and the simple things that employers can do to maintain a more content and fulfilled workforce. Win a Bottle a Manchester Raspberry Infused Gin

Win a Bottle a Manchester Raspberry Infused Gin

COMPETITION IS NOW OVER AND THE WINNER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. THANKS SO MUCH FOR READING TIKICHRIS. PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR LOTS MORE FUN AND FREEBIES TO COME.

Just in time for Valentine’s, I’ve got a beautiful bottle of Manchester Raspberry Infused Gin to give away.

Manchester Gin is the product of a love story. Its creators Seb and Jen first fell in love over a gin and tonic on a chance encounter in February of 2013. By 2016, their love for each other – and for gin – had grown so much that the couple launched their own distillery in central Manchester. Multiple gold medals in the UK and abroad started stacking up for their range of contemporary style gins.

There are four gins in the range: Signature, Raspberry Infused, Wild Spirit, and Overboard.

Raspberry Infused is the brand’s bestseller. Known as “Pink Manchester Gin”, raspberry notes meld with a classic gin flavour profile, complemented by light floral notes and a pretty pink hue.

A perfect potion for you and your sweetheart? Perhaps! Continue reading

BlacKkKlansman | Rakuten TV

BlacKKKlansman

You see the posters for a film on a station platform. You’re interested. You stop on an ad for it when leafing through the free commuter tabloid. You think you’d like it. You overhear folks raving about it and maybe even know a few friends who saw it and loved it. You mean to see it.

Weeks go by. The film you aimed to watch is no longer screening in the cinemas.

That’s how it is with me most of the time. I mean to see a film but never get around to doing so. Life gets in the way. Obligations pile up. The title I want to see is only playing on the other side of London.

Case in point: Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. Thanks to Rakuten TV for providing a convenient and affordable way for me getting to catch the movies I missed. Continue reading
