The Key Questions to Ask Yourself Before Booking an All-Inclusive Vacation (Going Places)

The Key Questions to Ask Yourself Before Booking an All-Inclusive Vacation

Wondering what to do for your next vacation? Have you considered visiting an all-inclusive resort as an option?

While you may be imagining crowded facilities, kids running around, loud music, and less than optimal food and drink, not all resorts follow this stereotype. Many all-in resorts offer top-quality accommodation, dedicated and knowledgeable staff, and other amenities; all this is done with an eye on making guests as happy as possible and giving you more bang for your buck than you otherwise would get if you had booked and purchased everything for yourself à la carte. But all-inclusive resorts aren’t for everybody. Especially for independent travels, a stay at even the swankiest of five-star resorts can feel like doing time in a prison.

To help you determine if an all-inclusive resort is right for your vacationing preferences, here’s a roundup of the key questions to ask yourself before booking an all-in holiday.

#MenabreaMaestro Class with Jay Rayner

A “craft of column-writing” masterclass with the Observer’s (in)famous restaurant critic, Jay Rayner, was a fun and insight outing.

To be honest, I went for the beer. The Guardian Masterclasses event, held at the Everyman Theatre near King’s Cross, was hosted in association with premium Italian brewery, Menabrea Birra. Continue reading

Tips For Eating Healthier and Better This Summer

Tips for Eating Healthier and Better This Summer

Let’s face it, summertime can be scary for those trying to live healthier.

With the warmer weather, individuals tend to go out more. There are countless backyard BBQ’s with tons of delicious foods. Of course, there are those fabulous food carts and ice cream stands as well. Much of this food is really loaded with calories, high fat and sugar amounts. Highly processed foods used a lot in fast foods and snacks contain harmful ingredients like high amounts of salt, MSG and other unhealthy flavourings and even chemicals. There has to be a better way to eat this summer. Continue reading

The Elephant’s Head, Clapton

P1170724

The Elephant’s Head in Hackney does crafty cocktails and great pub grub in a moody, Victorian setting.

I remember this Lower Clapton Road establishment from a few years back when it opened as decidedly Frenchy The Bonneville. I was surprised and somewhat saddened to hear it had been rebooted as The Elephant’s Head with the menu now leaning more toward British fare. I really liked The Bonneville and thought the food was awesome. Oh well. During a recent visit, I was heartened to see the drinks list wasn’t messed with too much and that the food on offer was still tasty. Continue reading

Pomona’s Serves California Cool from Notting Hill Kitchen

P1170700

Pomona’s in Notting Hill looks across the proverbial pond (and ‘flyover’ country) to land its culinary sights on Californian shores for inspiration.

I had a lovely lunch there recently. Dining outside in the restaurant’s large terrace on a sunny summer day, I felt as though I was in California, though I was plenty pleased to be in London enjoying a fine meal in such a nice setting. Continue reading

7 Experts Share Their Must-Haves to Pack in Your Carry-On This Summer (The Real Deal)

Screen Shot 2018-07-14 at 12.13.07

Here’s a link to a post about what to pack in your carry-on bags for summer travels. The post is on RetailMeNot’s The Real Deal blog. Seven travel bloggers, including me, contributed to the list with a variety of helpful hints and tips.

Delicate skin and an ever-broadening bald spot mean that sunscreen and a cap are essential in my carry-on, even when I’m checking a bag. I keep a charged solar power bank with me to make sure my phone stays juiced up. I hardly ever leave the house without a reusable water bottle these days.

Guest Post by Chris Osburn (Clementine Communications)

Guest Post by Chris Osburn for Clementine Communications

The team at Clementine Communications recently got in touch inviting me to submit a guest post about current trends in the food and drinks industry. I was happy to oblige and share some thoughts.

Did you know I can predict the future? Me neither. Because I can’t. Nobody can. But isn’t it fun to punditize (yes, I made that up) when offered an opportunity? And that’s just what the lovely folks at Clementine Communications have afforded me with the invitation to submit a guest post. So here is a trio of trends that I wholeheartedly welcome and I reckon are set to shape the food and drink scene over the remaining months of 2018 and into next year.

Authentic, Local and Not Currywurst | Berlin | Best of the Wurst

P1150806

I thoroughly enjoyed meals I had at four classic Berlin currywurst joints, but I didn’t only eat currywurst during my trip. That would be crazy. While bopping around Berlin, I also make sure to have a taste of other local street eats.

Among my favourite non-currywurst dining experiences were two that were just as authentically Berliner and equally inexpensive and tasty: Bäckerei & Konditorei Waldtraut Balzer and Mustafa’s Gemüse Kebap. Continue reading

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake at Carioca Brixton

P1170650

A recently weekend brunch visit to Carioca in Brixton was not my first. And I’m please to report the food is still tasty and portions still generous at this quaint Market Row eatery. But it was my first time to have slice of the chocolate peanut butter cheesecake. And – wow – that was a sumptuous and texturally magnificent end to a meal.

Dishes like the Ipanema (chorizo, avocado and poached egg on a maize muffin, £7.85) and the Samba (grilled veggies, black beans and poached egg with crispy sweet potato on a maize muffin, £7.85) were as full of flavour as they were filling. Ditto the chargrilled cured Portuguese chorizo (with chunky chips and black honey syrup, £7.50). Continue reading

Curry at the Wall | Berlin | Best of the Wurst

P1150755

Vegan dining in Berlin? It could be wurst as I found out during one of my meals when I last visited the German capital.

Being on the road for a month with a tight budget and tighter itinerary made it hard to eat as healthily as I would have liked or otherwise done. And given how craven I can be about food, it was doubly difficult being in carno-rific Germany for all that time. But I tried to do my best getting enough veggies and fiber while limiting the most excessive of treats to rare occasions.

Honestly, very nutritious and non-meat options were available across the country and could be purchased with relative ease, particularly in Berlin and as long as I could look past the many awesome kebab shops, butcheries and such. I didn’t have to totally give up on my pursuit of Berlin’s best currywurst though! Continue reading

Judith Schrut munched apples, threw ping pong balls and couldn’t stop laughing during Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music: the First Act.

Live knitters, brass musicians and backing singers stage left. Harp, strings and temperance choir, stage right. The legendary Taylor Mac, aka the gender fluid pronoun ‘judy, in a multi-coloured explosion of glitter and tinsel, spectacularly centre stage. Continue reading
