Uncannily Great Dining at The Balcon, Sofitel St James Hotel

DSC_3211

All the right points were hit seemingly with prescience during my recent dinner at the Sofitel St James Hotel’s Balcon resulting in one of the better restaurant experiences of my year thus far.

In many ways, The Balcon’s dinner menu appears as though it were written just for me – almost eerily so in fact. A starter course of pan-fried snails with chorizo, sweet potato purée, oloroso jus, and hazelnuts (£11)? That’ll do just fine thank you – and how did Chef Matt Greenwood manage to read my mind for a perfect way to commence a meal? Ditto on the roasted hake fillet, with ratatouille, green olive tapenade, and shellfish oil (£21) main course and strawberry, pomegranate, pistachio and rosewater trifle (£7) dessert as well.

Brasserie Blanc Southbank

Brasserie Blanc - Southbank

Brasserie Blanc Southbank has reopened with a spiffy new look. I liked what I saw (and tasted) during my recent snoop.

Revered Chef Raymond Blanc’s growing group of French restaurants has been mentioned with a nom-nom-nod of approval on this blog before – just not by me. An invitation to admire the refurb and the menu at Blanc’s Southbank brasserie rectified that matter and resulted in a lovely night out in a stylish setting.

The event saw El Dorado’s Brand Ambassador, Dean Macgregor, and Rococo’s Retail and Event Manager, Sam Smallman suggest a range of chocolate pairings to accompany El Dorado’s 12, 15 and 21 year old rums.

Easter Afternoon Tea at The Langham London

DSC_3196

Hop(p)ing for a happy Easter? You’re guaranteed a delectable and playful one with the limited run Easter Afternoon Tea offering by The Langham London’s Executive Pastry Chef Cherish Finden.

As yummy as it is elegant and as exquisitely executed as it is super cute, the limited run tea commences with a lemon posset amuse bouche and ends with a selection of pastries displayed as a scampering Easter Bunny scene that’s almost too adorable to eat – but definitely too delicious not too.

Theo Randall at the InterContinental Reopens – Still a Great Place for Italian Cuisine

Theo_Randall_at_the_InterContinental_3

Taking stock of a decade doing delicious justice to classic Italian dishes, Theo Randall has reopened his restaurant at the InterContinental after an interiors refurb and the addition of a few new menu items. Great news! And the best news about the reopening is that Chef Randall has managed to maintain all the qualities that already had made his eatery one of my favourite places for Italian food.

The main dining area of the restaurant has been made more intimate with brass screens and a subdued colour scheme. A new Kitchen Table for eight with views into the kitchen has been introduced and is coupled with the opportunity to enjoy at the table special tasting menus created 24-hours beforehand. I’m a Mess. So is My House. Is There Any Help?

DSCF1953

I’m a mess: in and out of town more than ever, dashing between events and meetings, uncertain where I left my passport/keys/Oyster card/etc, wondering what day of the week it is. But you know what’s even bigger mess? My home.

The more I go! go! go! the more things pile up at home. I love what I do. I want to do more of it. All the travel, writing, and pursuing my business and pleasure in equal measure results in plenty of reward and gratification but also less time and inclination to clean and put order to my mess at home. Plus, my partner and I share our house with the furriest cat in the universe. We love the little critter a bunch. Still, if we miss a week of vacuuming and the fur situation gets intense.

Turtle Bay Dalston

DSC_3167

Adding to its portfolio of more than two dozen owned Caribbean themed bars and restaurants across the UK, Turtle Bay has opened its latest outlet in Dalston – the group’s fourth in London. Already a fan of the ever buzzing and often rollicking Walthamstow location, I was glad to accept an offer to drop by the newest Turtle Bay for a taste and a snoop.

Turtle Bay Dalston is a good restaurant to keep in mind for casual dining. The menu features a moreish range of what you might expect at such an establishment. I certainly found the dishes I sampled to be tasty.

The Magic Hour with Tony Middleton (aka Sonic) at the Grand Royale

The Magic Hour with Tony Middleton (Sonic)

Do you believe in magic? Whether you do or not I am certain you will be amazed and have a fantastic night out if you attend The Magic Hour and allow magician Tony Middleton (aka Sonic) to perplex and entertain you with his sleight of hand, illusions and Victorian spiritualist theatrics.

Set in the antiquated but impeccably restored splendor of the Grand Royale hotel’s Victorian lounge set just off Hyde Park, Tony Middleton’s show in the style of “the Golden Age of Magic” was a bewildering delight to attend. Continue reading

Ten Years of tikichris

London Daily Photo: BOOM

Finally my blog has caught up with my maturity level! And that’s something to celebrate.

Yep, Ye Olde Tiki Chris Weblog hath turneth the big one-O. That’s like reaching eldercare age for an online endeavor like this, right? But it’s still kicking, and so am I. And if I may have pissed my pants* over the past decade, it’s been from sheer exuberance, not lack of bladder control.

Here’s How to Eat Your Way Through Austin, Just in Time for SXSW (Miles Away)

Micklethewait Craft Meats

If you’re traveling to Austin for the food alone, you won’t be the first to savor such a journey. Austin is an awesome place for BBQ, and there have been plenty of folks who’ve paid a visit just to get their fill of the area’s world famous brisket. But it’s not just ‘cue that excites taste buds in this Texas town. Austin boasts some of the best Tex Mex in the state. And if it’s classic southern cooking you’re hoping to receive alongside Austin’s renowned southern hospitality, you’re sure to get hearty helpings of it.

Yep, Austinites do the tried and true Texas traditions deliciously well. However, the menu of must-eat treats doesn’t stop there.

Cork Report | So Much More to Bark About

DSC_8252

Obviously, cork stoppers are by and far the most likely application for cork. But – as a sustainably harvested crop that’s naturally fire retardant and insulating (thermal and acoustic), flexible, hypoallergenic, and impermeable to liquid and gas – there’s plenty more being done with it. Shall we have a quick look?

Second to stoppers (and a far second at that), floor and wall coverings are the most widely used application for cork. Eight million square meters of cork flooring are sold annually by Amorim, and those numbers are said to be on the rise. It’s an ideal material for its insulating properties – keeping your noises in and your neighbours’ rumblings out while helping you save energy and lower the cost of heating and air conditioning as well and reducing the possibility of a fire spreading. Plus – in my humble opinion – it looks great and adds a warm and cosy effect to any number of settings.

ETM Group’s Limited Edition Hot Cross Bunny Burger

DSC_3125

Dark humour for hearty appetites? I’m game. And so was a substantial amount of my recent preview lunch of ETM Group’s limited edition Hot Cross Bunny Burger at Chiswell Street Dining Rooms.

Offered for a limited run just in time for Easter, the Hot Cross Bunny Burger is stacked high with a 70% rabbit and 30% pork sausage patty topped with Lincolnshire rarebit and presented on a hot cross brioche bun with carrot miso ketchup, baby gem lettuce and a thick slice of beefsteak tomato. I savoured every bite of the prototype version of the bunny burger as created by Chiswell Street’s Head Chef Peter Fitz-Dreyer. The patty was particularly moreish – and super juicy (request extra napkins!). I loved the miso ketchup too.

Tacos, Chocolate Chicken, and Barbacoa: The Ultimate Mexican Food Guide (Miles Away)

Mexican food

A top contender for the world’s most delicious destination and home to some of Latin America’s most sought after foods ever – Mexico is a great place to eat!

But what’s on offer in this diverse country versus what you might have grown accustomed to chowing down on at your local Tex Mex burrito bar are probably very different dishes indeed. From region to region, what’s cooking in the pot and served on the plate varies greatly depending on regional crops, climate, and culture. In fact, like the great culinary traditions of France, Mexico’s distinctive cuisine has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

Cocktails and Ceviche Pairing Menu at Asia de Cuba

DSC_3111

Asia de Cuba, everybody’s favourite Chino-Latino restaurant has officially launched its rum bar with its own sugarcane press and a new cocktails and ceviche pairing menu with drinks featuring Havana Club rums.

It’s a lovely bar, as dimly lit and wisely stocked as you’d like a rum bar to be, with more than 50 varieties of rum from 18 different countries. Comfortable too. And situated within the luxury boutique digs of St Martin’s Lane Hotel – just steps from Leicester Square Station (but definitely of another, more relaxed yet sophisticated ilk) – it’s a smart and convenient place for a drink as well.

Yorica Free From Café Opens on Wardour Street, Soho

Yorica (or Yorica! as the folks behind this new brand prefer to write it) opens today promising Londoners the chance to indulge in a sweet treat “with none of the nasties.” The shop sells a range of frozen yoghurts, ice creams and shakes that are dairy, lactose, gluten, nut and egg free – and all completely vegan.

A first of its kind in the UK to cater to people who suffer adverse reactions to the main food allergies, Yorica’s offers are actually yummy. I dropped by the launch party last night and very much enjoyed tasting a number of items. Everything I tried was tasty, and I especially liked the matcha ice cream and the pumpkin and cinnamon shake.

Namibia: Expect the Unexpected (Going Places)

DSC_2284

The sparsely populated, mostly desert nation of Namibia extends north to south along a sizable stretch of southwest Africa’s Atlantic coast. Sitting just north of South Africa, and also sharing a border with Angola, Botswana, and Zambia—the country spreads inland hundreds of miles to encompass some the continent’s most beautiful and distinctive landscapes.

The big draw to Namibia is the big game. With healthy numbers of lions, elephants, giraffes, the world’s largest population of cheetahs, and plenty more animals—wildlife flourishes in Namibia, making it a premiere destination for safari. Depending on where you are in the country, you’re all but guaranteed to see lots and lots of wild animals, unperturbed by humans, and living in their natural habitat.

Cork Report | Stop and Go

POP! It’s the exuberant sound of victory, celebration and achievement. And it starts with a simple pull of a cork stopper from a wine bottle.

During such festive moments, the humble stopper is soon discarded and hardly ever acknowledged as a key an element. Still, stoppers are a big deal – and big business too.
