Unsung Cities | Köln, Germany

An ancient Roman enclave on the Rhine, Cologne is first and foremost a river town. That’s why the Romans set up shop here and why it grew to prosper during the Middle Ages as a significant hub of Catholicism. Roman ruins remain embedded in the cityscape and Cologne Cathedral towers over the town, celebrated as one of Europe’s best examples of Gothic grandeur.

Tasty Pacific Treats at Tombo Poké and Matcha Bar, Soho

That poké is now ‘a thing’ in London is weird one for me – and seems kinda random. There are at least three eateries (that I know of) now open in town with poké as the main menu item. It’s “the next ceviche” I’ve been told (more than a few times) when I mention that I think this trend is odd. Continue reading

Recipe: Ricotta Buttermilk Ice Cream

This recipe for ricotta buttermilk ice cream is easy to make, requires minimal ingredients, and yields some much more flavour and creamy texture than typical ice creams tend to have. The ricotta and the buttermilk came from Bermondsey’s Kappacasein dairy. I the ricotta is definitely good enough to eat on its own, and I reckon would be great in any number of dishes. Maybe next time I’ll make some cassata. Continue reading

Häagen-Dazs Master Ice Cream Academy: Free Ice Cream Fun at Bloomsbury Square Today!

I dropped by Bloomsbury Square yesterday and had a great time. Already a fan of Dan’s doings at Duck & Waffle, I loved getting to sample his peach melba Champagne float. The event was my second encounter with Professor Smith and I was just as amazed and inspired as I was the first time. Rose’s blog, The Londoner, had been completely off my radar until the event. But to have teamed up with Dan, I reckon her site’s worth taking a look-see at. Maybe I’ll do that now while you make plans to get over to Bloomsbury Square, WC1A 2NS today between 11am and 6pm. Infographic: The Evolution of the Ice Cream Van

In Britain, ice cream vans mean summer. They are synonymous with childhood and bygone days of bicycles and water balloon fights. Always heard before they were seen, their chimes heralded relief from the summer sun in the saccharine-sweet tunes of some song you knew well, but didn’t know where from … Continue reading

Hey Häagen-Dazs, Gimme Five! #realornothing

Häagen-Dazs is my go-to ice cream. Honestly, much of the reasoning behind my preference is that I know the shops nearest my flat are going to have it in their freezers. Still, given the choice, I tend to buy Häagen-Dazs as I reckon it’s usually the yummiest option (no matter where in London I’m shopping). So, I enjoy it for its flavour – and its nice creamy texture – but the cool thing about Häagen-Dazs products is that their made without any yucky stuff. Continue reading

Eat Basel: A Tale of Two Surprise Menus

Luckily for me, eating well in Basel is a straightforward matter. Eating well and cheaply is another story all together. But affordable options can be found. Here’s the scoop on two “surprise” dinners I had while in Basel: one a rather upscale affair, the other decidedly low brow and mercifully low priced. I’ve also listed a few other quality venues for food and drink that I came across during my Basel city break. Continue reading
