10 Top Tempranillo Red Wines

10 Top Tempranillo Red Wines

It’s as Spanish as castanets and paella. Tempranillo (temp-ra-neo) makes some of Spain’s best red wines. The main red grape variety used in Rioja’s red wines, it has an unmistakeably savoury flavour, with hints of leather, tobacco leaves, and fruit flavours ranging including redcurrant, pomegranate, and mulberry.

You’ll find Tempranillo wines in other Spanish wine regions too, from Toro to Ribera del Duero, Valdepeñas to Penedès. Although you’ll also find a host of other names it goes by, depending upon the area. Continue reading

Every great holiday must come to an end, and so too must Judith Schrut’s glorious gambol down the heel of Italy’s boot.

We literally jumped with joy (see above) to hear that our last few days in Italy would be spent cozying up to its beautiful east coast, our backs to the blazing sun and our full frontals to the azure Adriatic.

Camden Town Roadkill

Camden Town Roadkill

If you seek beefy flavour and no faffing about, Camden Town Roadkill serves the sort of food that’ll stop you dead in your tracks.

Earlier this week, I pulled over to The North Yard of The Stables Market for a burger (plus steak and sides ) from this newly launched food stall. I was impressed – not only with the quality food but with the concept as well.

Judith Schrut walks (and cycles) on water as she continues her journey through Southern Italy.

The time has come to bid farewell to the seductive charms of Alberobello and re-mount our trusty bici. We also have to up our two-wheeled game considerably, as we are joined for today’s 40 km route by a couple of pedal pros, cycle journalists Antonio and Antonello.

Top 10 Wines to Drink with Curries

Top 10 Wines to Drink with Curries

Wine and curry? It might sound unlikely. After all, it’s beer and curry for millions of us. Every week.

So why wine?

Sure, beer is an obvious choice with a curry. But once you’ve worked out the subtle differences between a Cobra and a Singha beer, you’re done.

With wine, there’s much more to explore. Continue reading

Head for the Heel | A Night in Noci

Marino & Anna Notarnicola

Judith Schrut enjoys an evening of gastronomic joy with Noci’s legend of the larder, Marino Notarticula.

We kept hearing that Noci was yet another historic and hospitable Puglian town renowned for  its gastronomy. But let’s be honest, we were going to Noci for one reason and one reason only: to spend an evening in the exuberant company of Chef Marino Notarnicola, Italy’s panini king, and experience his legendary three course sandwich dinner. Staysure’s Guide to UK Airport Parking

Staysure’s Guide to UK Airport Parking

Travel insurance provider, Staysure, recently conducted a study about airport parking, which offers valuable insight into which airports provide the easiest and cheapest parking.

The study looks at the top 10 UK airports by passenger volume. All of its findings are fascinating. A few go against what you might expect to be the case.

Some of them turn out to be great time and money saving tips, including these handy tidbits:

  • The typical cost of local international airport parking;
  • Which airport’s car parks are busiest; and
  • The amount you can save by pre-booking your parking.

Detox Menu at Chucs Restaurant & Cafe

Detox Menu at Chucs Restaurant & Cafe

Shhh … don’t tell anybody about Chucs Restaurant & Cafe inside Harrods. It’s just the sort of calm oasis I’d like to keep all for myself.

I have a confession to make. Harrods fascinates the hell out of me. It’s a gawking kind of fascination for the most part; the scale of the place and scope of its offer, the people watching, the opulence (spanning the very real and the extremely faux) overwhelm and beguile me. I also get a little giddy when combing Harrods’ food halls where I don’t gawk so much as I ogle and dream – and usually end up buying something yummy to nibble.

So when the invitation came my way to visit the Harrods branch of Chucs Restaurant & Cafe and sample its January Detox Menu, I was eager for the chance to explore another nook of the giant luxury labyrinth and have something new to eat there. Continue reading

Head for the Heel | Yours Trulli, Alberobello

 Trulli of Alberobello

Judith Schrut continues her adventures in southern Italy with a snuggly night in a traditional trullo cottage, a hearty breakfast and a dramatic visit to a cave.

The trulli of Alberobello, Puglia: you’ve probably seen them loads of times – in ads for romantic getaways, stylish snaps on Instagram and front covers of Italian travel guides. But there’s a perfectly good reason why that’s so. For the extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage town of Alberobello is truly, or should I say trulli, a magical place.

Curry House CoCo Ichibanya

Japan’s largest and best known chain of curry houses, CoCo Ichibanya, has opened near Leicester Square. For a full-on dose of filling comfort food served with fiery heat, a visit to this legendary eatery’s first European outpost is a must.

It wasn’t too long ago I tried – and loved – CoCo Ichibanya for the first time in Japan. To know I now can have it here is delicious news indeed!

Lost Boys Pizza + Croque Monsieur Absinthe Bar Open in Camden

Lost Boys Pizza + Croque Monsieur Absinthe Bar Open in Camden

Lost Boys Pizza differentiates from other London pizzerias in two ways. One, it adds charcoal to its dough for distinctively dark pizza crusts with earthy flavour. Two, it exhibits hardcore fanboy love for 80s vampire flick, The Lost Boys.

With a well established pizzeria in Archway, Lost Boys has launched a second site. This one’s in Camden near Mornington Crescent Station. Downstairs is a basement bar called Croque Monsieur. It’s an absinthe bar – not adhering to the movie theme but still rather vampire-y.

I dropped by the new Camden outlet for the press launch this week. Here are some thoughts. Continue reading

Head for the Heel | Cycling the Appian Way

Judith Schrut continues her hiatus in Italy’s heel with an exhilarating cycle ride along ancient Roman roads, bike-friendly railway bridges and villages perched atop rocky ravines.

Whether you’re an Easy Rider, Whizz-bang Wheeler or Velo Virgin, I truly believe the best way to explore Italy is on a bike. And joy of joys, that’s how we’re spending the second day of our hiatus in the heel. Continue reading

What to Eat in Kobe, Japan (Great British Chefs)

What to Eat and Drink in Kobe, Japan

A week in Japan’s western inland sea region of Setouchi was a tasty tour of highly anticipated indulgences and unexpectedly delicious surprises. My days were split between two cities, Kobe and Hiroshima, with short trips to their outskirts and nearby countryside. To say I ate well would be an understatement.

As with the only other time I had visited Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto and Hakone back in 2012), I found it was practically impossible to have a bad meal, no matter the price point or venue. Whether hunched over a grill in a hut at the back of an industrial lot on Hiroshima Bay for a breakfast of roasted oysters, or admiring the precision of a private chef grilling top-grade Kobe beef for lunch in an exclusive upscale restaurant, quality and provenance of ingredients were accorded the utmost respect and value for money was all but a given.

Read on to discover the best bites I experienced during my time in the meaty metropolis of Kobe, where I was keen to get to the meat of the matter of what makes this city’s namesake beef so coveted.

New Vegan Dishes at Coya

New Vegan Dishes at Coya

Under the guidance of Culinary Director Sanjay Dwivedi, upscale Latin American restaurant Coya has added a range of new plant-based dishes to its menu.

Already a fan of Dwivedi’s doings – vegan and otherwise – as well of the original Coya restaurant in Mayfair, I was pleased to make it round finally to the sister location, Coya Angel Court near Bank Station, for a tasting of the new vegan dishes. Continue reading

Head for the Heel | Magical Matera

barisano_matera

Judith Schrut’s sojourn through Italy’s sunny south starts in magical must-see Matera.

It’s one of the oldest cities on earth, inhabited for over 9,000 years. It’s a place of infinite beauty and picture postcard views, ancient cave houses carved into limestone rock, meandering streets and narrow alleyways in a largely undiscovered, unspoilt part of Italy. This is where Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ and Richard Gere’s King David were filmed because of its astonishing likeness to Jerusalem.  And it’s probably the most stunning European city you’ve never heard of.  Continue reading

The Oystermen Seafood Bar & Kitchen

The Oystermen

Ain’t it great when something you already love gets better? That’s definitely the delicious case with Covent Garden raw bar and fish restaurant, The Oystermen.

When I first visited The Oystermen Seafood Bar & Kitchen soon after it opened during the summer of 2017, my meal was one of the best I had that year. It was one of few restaurants I made a special effort to return to as well as the place to eat I raved about most for months.

Heading over to The Oystermen for a friendly lunch earlier this week, I found the year and a half old eatery to be doing an even tastier job than before with an updated and broadened – but still exquisitely simple – menu.

Highlights were manifold.

The Connaught Bar Gin

Connaught Bar Gin Bottle on Bar

The Connaught Bar at The Connaught Hotel in Mayfair has launched its own gin, crafted and distilled in house to commemorate the 10th anniversary of this luxurious award-winning bar.

Yet another London-made gin on the market? Yeah, I known. There’s a vast volume of locally made (or at least locally labeled) gins sloshing about town these days. Most of it’s alright, but little of it is terribly interesting. Before you complete your eye roll, though, you might want to consider having a taste of this extraordinary spirit created by the Connaught’s Director of Mixology Agostino Perrone.
