Celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving in Toronto (OneTravel)

Canadian Thanksgiving takes place on the second Saturday of every October. This year the date falls on the 14th. Differences between the Canadian and American versions of the holiday are nuanced with both celebrations centering around a family feast of turkey with all the trimmings. Essentially, Canadian Thanksgiving is just a lot earlier and further north – but just as delicious! Continue reading

So I was running around all over town yesterday without a chance to stop for a meal. Breakfast at Aqua Shard

Yes of course, the view is the main draw at Aqua Shard, but don’t let that get in the way of enjoying the food and stylish setting. I recently had breakfast there and left feeling nearly as pleased with my full English as I was with this upscale restaurant’s full-on vistas. For a (high) rise ‘n shine that towers over the competition, the newly introduced breakfast menu at Aqua Shard is tops. Continue reading

London Daily Photo: Honky Tonk Clapham

Honky Tonk Clapham opened about a week and a half ago, riding the cibus Americanus wave south of the river in the hopes of finding the same success that sister bar and restaurant, Honky Tonk Chelsea has.

I dropped by Honky Tonk Clapham last night for the launch party, munched on some pretty decent chicken wings and enjoyed a Maple Trace cocktail (essentially an Old Fashioned with cinnamon and maple syrup infused bourbon). Yee haw. Continue reading

Restaurant Review: Central & Co, Great Marlbourgh Street, Soho

What’s with all this “& Co” business in London these days? Here’s my third review in a row of an eatery with such a suffix to its name. Fortunately, my & Co trio has provided me with more than decent grub. In the case of Soho brasserie with chic basement bar, Central & Co, I found an especially convenient and fairly swank venue offering a something-for-everyone approach toward food and drink. Last night’s Ladyboy beauty pageant at Thai restaurant, Mango Tree, not only celebrated ten years of he/she glamour competition but was also the restaurant’s 12th birthday birthday. Compared to past events, the 2013 “Mr & Miss Mango Tree Ladyboy Safari” had a touch more of a gala air about it (the canapés were tastier than I remembered as well). Continue reading

London Daily Photo: Thomasina Miers, Burrito Mama

Thomasina Meirs (fresh back to work from several months’ maternity leave) and the folksbehind popular London restaurant group, Wahaca, have announced plans to open Burrito Mama – a new takeaway restaurant at One New Change (along with an actual Wahaca outlet in the same shopping complex) – at the end of October.

For a taste of what’s to come, head over to Street Feast in Dalston today where Tommi and crew will be slinging beans and stuffin’ ’em in toasted tortillas at a pop-up market stall (don’t worry – there’s covered seating if it rains). I dropped by last night for a pork pibil “Mexicana Mama” (sin rice but abundantly filled with pork and crunchy slaw). Yum. Continue reading

London Daily Photo: La Vie Est Belle with Pierre Hermé

I spent yesterday afternoon at the Residence de France at 11 Kensington Palace Gardens (the official home of the French Ambassador) previewing some seriously delectable macarons and more by pâtissier-confectioneur extraordinaire Pierre Hermé. Much of what I tasted is under strict embargo until later this year, but let me assure you that it’s all well worth the wait. So stayed tuned for more details. Until then, I can tell you that Hermé’s Fetish Ispahan range will be available from 22 October to 8 December. A blend of rose, lychee and raspberry, the “Ispahan” flavour comes in variety of forms such as macarons, granola, bonbon and confiture. Yum. Continue reading
