Bill’s Restaurant in Kingston has just re-opened with a fresh new look. Think colourful décor, vintage trinkets, quirky chandeliers and luxurious velvet seating. The large outdoor terrace with idyllic Thameside views and comfy rattan furnishings has also been enhanced. What hasn’t changed is Bill’s wide ranging, good value menu and welcoming staff.

Covent Garden in Bloom Returns

covent_gnds_flowers_07

Demi Perera confesses her affinity for flowers and her love of Covent Garden in Bloom.

I’m an anthophile. I’ve made no secret of this. I buy myself flowers on the way home, order them with my weekly shop and despair if anyone forgets to gift me anything floral on my birthday. Given this affinity when I was asked to cover Covent Garden in Bloom I thought about it for less than a nano second before I said, “yes”.

Selina Periampillai Talks about The Island Kitchen (All Consumed)

Selina Periampillai Talks about The Island Kitchen

Here’s a new episode of All Consumed, a podcast about food, drink and travel hosted by Neil Davey and Chris Osburn.

Riding a wave of rave reviews and phenomenal sales for her book, The Island Kitchen, Selina Periampillai takes a moment to chat with me about her Mauritian heritage and how she turned her love for island cooking into a successful and dynamic career.

Published by Bloomsbury, The Island Kitchen is Selina’s debut book. It features beautiful photography (and a very attractive cover) alongside dozens of easy to make recipes for dishes from Mauritius and other Indian Ocean islands such as the Seychelles, Maldives and Madagascar.

A self-taught chef and food writer, Selina began her career hosting a Mauritian supper club from her home in Croydon which soon was followed by opportunities to host pop-ups, teach cookery classes, present at food festivals and cater private events through her company, Taste Mauritius. Her writing has appeared in BBC Good Food Magazine, BA High Life, JamieOliver.com and many more.

Two Keys: Mixing it Up for Summer

Two Keys Mixers, courtesy Fraser Communications

Fancy unlocking your spirit this season?  Judith Schrut certainly did, while enjoying the launch event for new brand Two Keys’ awesome mixers.

After much flavourful experimenting, gin enthusiasts James Simpson and Jack Herlihy discovered that tea paired brilliantly with certain spirits. So, Two Keys’ first two mixers were born. Black Tea Mixer is a dark, smoky blend of premium Indian and Sri Lankan teas while Green Tea Mixer is a delicate, light and subtly sweet mix of fine Japanese green teas. Both tea blends are cold brewed, touched with sugar and gently carbonated. I found them equally refreshing but distinctly different from one another, and perfect served over a tall glass of ice and either gin or vodka. Continue reading

America’s Most Underrated National Parks and What to Do There (Going Places)

America's Most Underrated National Parks and What to Do There

There are 58 national parks in the United States. Some are of course far more popular than others, but we firmly believe they are all well worth experiencing. While the best-known parks — such as the Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone, and Yosemite — see visitor numbers swell year after year, many underrated and less frequented parks are often virtually empty or at least nowhere near as crowded as their more famous counterparts.

Here’s our look at 10 of the best national parks that are least appreciated, with reasons why you shouldn’t overlook them when booking round trip flights to your next outdoor adventure.

What Type of Water Filter Will Be Best for Your House

P1170254

Water is a major lifeline for humans. It is not inly used for drinking but also important for domestic purposes such as washing and cleaning. However, most of us get contaminated hard water in our water supply lines, which is not fit for human consumption.

Under such circumstances, water filtration systems are a huge blessing since they provide cleaner and safer water on demand without any reliance on bottled water. That being said, with a dozen different types of water filters available in the market, it often gets difficult for newbies to figure out what kind of water filter will work for you.

Here is how you can choose a good water filter for your house.

Newly opened Chez Maiss inside the Broadway Shopping Centre at Hammersmith Station was everything I had hoped to encounter when reviewing a restaurant. It’s a hidden gem in plain sight offering delicious food and drink in a convenient location.

Set inside Broadway Shopping Centre near the Tesco Metro and The Craft Beer Co with an entrance from the street is family owned restaurant and wine bar, Chez Maiss. Owners Maiss and Rebal moved to London from Syria.

Andrea Levy’s novel about the postwar Caribbean-to-Britain migrant experience has been adapted for the stage.
Judith Schrut reviews this powerful, unmissable show, which opened at London’s National Theatre this week.

It was groundbreaking, bestselling and won multiple prizes as a novel and was equally impressive in its 2009 BBC incarnation. Now Small Island, Andrea Levy’s novel about the postwar Caribbean-to-Britain migrant experience, has been adapted into a powerful and timely stage version. It opened this week at the National Theatre to standing ovations and rave reviews.  In brief: beg, borrow or stand to see this very special show. Long may it run.

How “Growing Your Own” Helped Britain Survive the World Wars

IMG_0574

The devastation of the First World War saw a renewed emphasis by politicians and governments for it to be the war to end all wars.

As we now know, this wasn’t the case, and it’s almost 80 years since the start of the Second World War, just two decades later, and which also saw the loss of millions.

Starvation was a real fear throughout this period. In the 1930s, Britain imported 70% of its food, which required 20 million tonnes of shipping each year. It was recognised by the Germans that cutting off such imports could lead to mass starvation, so Britain had to act.

In this article, Arbordeck, who specialise in composite decking boards, explain how the UK dealt with the threat and how growing your own food helped the country during the hardest of times.

Red Cross Week

Red Cross Week

The week of 6 to 12 May is Red Cross Week here in the UK. It’s a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for a worthy cause.

With Mozambique being hit by an unprecedented two catastrophic cyclones in a matter of weeks; with the vicious bombings of churches and hotels across Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday; and with the conflict in Syria now in its ninth year forcing more than 11 million people to flee their homes – the work the Red Cross does is as vital now as ever it has been. Sadly, those above examples of where the Red Cross/Crescent/Crystal is offering crucial support are but three of far too many crises affecting millions of people across the globe.

There are some things (big and small) we can all do to help out.

Keep reading for details (swiped from the Red Cross website) about how you can lend a hand to people in need.

Ryan Chetiyawardana Opens Super Lyan at the Kimpton De Witt in Amsterdam

Hey gang, here’s an episode of All Consumed, a podcast about food, drink and travel co-created with fellow writer Neil Davey.

For this episode of All Consumed, I take a quick trip to Amsterdam for the launch of the Super Lyan bar at the Kimpton De Witt hotel. While there, I sit down with Super Lyan founder, Ryan Chetiyawardana aka Mr Lyan, for an interview.

Ryan is the driving force behind some of London’s best loved and most awarded bars – including the legendary and now defunct White Lyan in Hoxton and Lyaness at Sea Containers London (formerly known as Dandelyan). Ryan’s first venture outside of London, Super Lyan at the Kimpton De Witt will be followed by another bar project slate to open in Washington DC later this year.

During the interview, Ryan shares what it is that inspires him in Amsterdam and why Super Lyan is the bar that comes closest to being his dream venue.

Viet Hoa Cafe & Mess | Lucky 13

Viet Hoa Cafe & Mess | Lucky 13

2019 is the 13th anniversary of tikichris.com. I’m marking the seemingly inauspicious milestone with Lucky 13: a yearlong miniseries about 13 places to eat and drink that helped shape and define what I love about the London food and drink scene.

Among the bevy of Vietnamese eateries clustered along the Hoxton stretch of Kingsland Road is one that always has pleased my palate nightly every time I’ve visited: Viet Hoa Cafe & Mess. I’ve been dining there since 2006. Opened by two refugees, Viet Hoa was just a couple of years old at that time but still one of the first restaurants – if not actually the very first – to start out on what is now called “Pho Mile.”

But if you’ve got youngsters to entertain, there are times when a few family friendly pleasures beyond mini egg hunts and chocolate bunnies come in handy. Sadler’s Wells Dance House’s annual Family Weekend has the perfect solution.

5 Tips for Achieving Sustainable Tourism

 (Going Places)

5 Tips for Achieving Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable tourism is a term bandied about willy-nilly these day without nearly as much effort put into what’s actually behind the concept and how everyday people can put it into practice when planning trips.

In many cases, you might not need to alter how you travel too much to achieve sustainability when going somewhere. A lot of what should be done when booking last minute flights or dreaming about your next big vacation is as much about shifting perception as it is about taking action. Moreover, the sorts of changes you may need to take to be more sustainability-aware when you travel are all life affirming and should result in more meaningful and memorable adventures and getaways.

So before we start, what is sustainable tourism?
