Flexing Vegan | Temple of Seitan

Flexing Vegan | Temple of Seitan

Hail Seitan! I’m back with Flexing Vegan, a miniseries featuring reviews of eateries around London with vegan only menus. For my third flex, I’m keeping near the last place I visited (Sutton and Sons Vegan Chip Shop) for a devilishly good lunch at Temple of Seitan.

Just off Mare Street (near the Tesco Superstore) on Mornington Lane, this fast food joint is a sanctuary for devotees of seitan.

6 Destinations That Boomers and Millennials Agree are Definitely Worth Checking Out (Miles Away)

cheapo Cinque-Terra

Decades apart in age, Boomers and Millennials are often pitted against each other on either side of an imaginary spectrum of attitude and lifestyle.

Of course, differences exist between a generation born between 1945 and 1965 and one born between 1980 and 2000. But whether someone in her mid-60s is sitting down with a travel agent to book a cruise to the Mediterranean or someone about to turn 30 is using an app to search for cheap round trip flights to Italy, both individuals are after much of the same: a great time in a great place.

From bucket list bullet points to less likely getaways that garner an intergenerational thumbs up, we’ve taken a look at some of the most preferred destinations for Boomers and Millennials and found that there’s actually plenty of overlap in interest. Places that appeal to both a 70-year-old and a 25-year-old are definitely worth considering for your next journey no matter your age or travel style. To help you narrow your choice of where best to visit here’s a look at six destinations that Boomers and Millennials can agree are amazing.

Soho Wala

Soho Wala

Soho’s Carnaby Street corridor has become a smart area for grabbing a quality curry, with excellent restaurants such as Asma Khan’s Darjeeling Express and Calcutta Canteen, Dishoom and couple of other South Asian inspired eateries clustered around the street. New to the scene is Soho Wala with a menu of “fresh Indian street food” served in a relaxed atmosphere.

I recently had dinner at this two months old restaurant nestled on the side fo the Courthouse Hotel opposite the ‘top’ of Carnaby Street. Continue reading

Gumtree’s Tips to Selling Your Car Online

TC SPON GUMTREE CAR

Why sell your car with Gumtree?

Cars tend to be a vital aspect of daily life for most people. Making sure you are buying the right car for you is more important than ever. You need to take into account, the daily drives you would take, such as the journey to work or school; if you need a car with five doors, or a car that is able to drive off road. In the same way, you need to take these factors when you are ready to sell on your current.

Selling your car online is a great way to save some time when getting rid of a used car. Not only is buying and selling pre-owned cars a thrifty way to save some money but it also means you are doing your part to reduce the carbon footprint by decreasing the demand for the manufacturing of new cars.

How Meaty is Your Sausage?

Not all sausages are created equal. Some are significantly meaty and made from quality cuts while others are pathetically puny and pumped full of less than desirable and flavourless ingredients.

Have a look at this juicy infographic created by Nottingham-based kitchen appliance manufacturer, CDA, for a comparison of sausages from eight of the UK’s biggest supermarkets as well as the same from some of the country’s most popular sausage brands. How do your favourite bangers stack up? You might be surprised!

The Inside Track on the Ultimate in Slow Cooking at Europe’s Biggest Annual Snail Festival, l’Aplec del Caragol (City AM)

Screenshot 2019-03-06 at 18.32.23

Since its humble beginnings as a small riverside picnic among friends in 1980 to the grand foodie fiesta it is today, l’Aplec del Caragol occurs every May, about 100 miles northwest of Barcelona in the provincial town of Lleida. The party offers townsfolk and visitors alike a chance to enjoy a weekend celebrating one of the region’s favourite foods: snails.

So beloved is this Catalonian staple that the Aplec del Caragol attracts more than 200,000 attendees a year. The three-day party is by far the most important date on the city’s calendar and offers music, dance, a raucous parade of brass bands, and ample opportunity for eating and drinking. Children patrol the festival grounds with fully loaded squirt guns, and adding some Catalan flare to the event are castells (human towers) and sardanas (traditional circle dances).

Neptune Rum is the world’s most awarded rum of 2018 with more than 40 prestigious global awards to date. I’ve got a bottle of the golden rum from Barbados to share with one lucky tikichris reader.

Produced at Foursquare Distillery – one of the world’s most esteemed distilleries and the oldest on the island of Barbados – this Bajan rum is distilled in smooth pots and column stills from pure sugar cane molasses before being aged in ex-Bourbon casks for up to eight years. After that, the spirit goes through a cold filtration process and diluted with soft spring water to its bottling strength of 40% ABV for a smooth and complex drink with a peppery banana nose, notes of vanilla, spice and sherry on the palate and a brown sugar finish. Stick & Bowl | Lucky 13

Stick & Bowl | Lucky 13

2019 is the 13th anniversary of tikichris.com. I’m marking the seemingly inauspicious milestone with Lucky 13: a yearlong miniseries about 13 places to eat and drink that helped shape and define what I love about the London food and drink scene.

Stick & Bowl is a sliver of a restaurant set on the Kensington Gardens end of Kensington High Street for convenient eats during shopping expeditions, a meal after a walk in the park, or for a quick bite pre or post a show at Royal Albert Hall it can’t be beat. But there’s no need to drum up an excuse to visit this classic Chinese food takeaway.

Here’s my next Flexing Vegan review. As with my last review (Mooshies on Brick Lane), this one’s located in East London but a bit up the road in Hackney and does proper East End eats but with a vegan bend.

I’m talking about Sutton and Sons Vegan Chip Shop near Hackney Central Station where “fish” is code for batter fried banana blossom, but chips are definitely still of the potato variety and done up right to please the palate of any Brit.

Liquor Lanes Private Bowling at Queens Skate Dine Bowl

Liquor Lanes Private Bowling at Queens Skate Dine Bowl

Queens Skate Dine Bowl and Meatliquor have launched Liquor Lanes, a private bowling experience replete with its own bar and bartender and bowling lanes.

I dropped by Queens for the Liquor Lanes launch earlier this week and had a blast. I played a few rounds of bowling, scarfed down a couple of cheeseburgers, and enjoyed a little booze. With a pulsating 80s soundtrack piped through the private lanes area and an equally agreeably retro look and feel to the space, the new private bowling area provided an ideal venue for a night of laidback entertainment with ample elbow room and a splash of VIP treatment.

Top 5 Vodka Exporting Countries in the World

vodka-1515544_1280

Let’s face it; most of us enjoy a wee tipple of vodka every now and then, but few people know much about this charismatic alcoholic beverage, asides from the fact it’s traditionally made using potatoes (although even that is mostly wrong, since modern methods rely instead on grain or molasses).

Most people also seem to assume vodka originated in Russia or Poland, and that is indeed the partial truth. What many people don’t realize is that nowadays, these countries are no longer regarded as the top producers of this popular ethanol-based distillate.

The Coal Shed, One Tower Bridge

The Coal Shed, One Tower Bridge

With a “meat, fish, fire” mantra, The Coal Shed at One Tower Bridge aims to source native British breeds from small family run farms for its beef as well as sustainably and ethically caught fish and seafood from England’s south coast to fill its menu of big flavour, big portion dishes.

A darling of the Brighton dining scene, The Coal Shed opened an outlet on the south end of Tower Bridge in 2018 to somewhat mixed reception. A search yield for “Coal Shed London reviews” suggested almost diametric 50/50 ambivalence toward this year-old surf and turf eatery. My own visit (midweek in what looked like an at-capacity dining room) resulted in an overall positive experience.

I left the restaurant with thumbs up, belly full and palate fairly well satisfied.

Save a Crust and be a Better Cook in North London for Free!

I’m wising up to waste and helping get the word out about the North London Waste Authority’s Save a Crust campaign. It’s a fun and yummy way to reduce waste and be a better cook!

In my previous introductory post for this collaborative Save a Crust series, I mentioned that the NLWA was hosting a range of free cookery workshops and how I was looking forward to attending one. I did just that on Wednesday evening, sitting in on the Islington session at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School near Archway Station. I had a great time and took home a meal for my supper.

Bearing Witness: Don McCullin Retrospective at Tate Britain

The Battle for the City of Hue, South Vietnam, US M… House 1968Don McCullin, the Battle for the City of Hue, South Vietnam, 1968 © Don McCullin

As a major retrospective of Sir Donald McCullin’s work opens at Tate Britain, Judith Schrut looks at what his 60 years of photography have given us.

If you’ve heard of Don McCullin (born 1935) you probably think of him as a war photographer. His pictures of Vietnam are iconic– as are those of wars in Belfast and Beirut– and wars you may have forgotten in Bangladesh, Biafra, Cyprus and the Congo, to name a few that he has covered in more than half a century. But what you get in this major retrospective of Don McCullin’s life and work at Tate Britain is not just the horror of war but the concern of a man who really cares. “If you can’t feel what you’re looking at” he says, “then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures”.

Flexing Vegan | Mooshies London Vegan Burger Bar

Here’s my first Flexing Vegan review. It’s about the burger and fries at Mooshies, a vegan burger joint on Brick Lane. It’s a glowing review too. I really enjoyed my meal!

A quick Google search yielded a very highly rated Mooshies London Vegan Burger Bar at the corner of Brick Lane and Princelet Street. So I was off – but by no means was I put off with my burger!
